Mushroom ID Request
    #25481324 - 09/22/18 05:21 PM (5 years, 5 months ago)

Hi, All. I'm new to this site and new to Mushroom Hunting. I've always been fascinated with mushrooms but like most Noobs have a hard time identifying them. I hope to get good enough to forage for edibles one day but until then I ask for your help in this matter. I found the following mushroom growth while hiking with the family today on a trail along Lake Ontario. My guess is Laetiporus (Chicken of the woods) but thats just my guess. Thanks for you help.

Habitat: Hiking trail - Found on a dead tree, I dont know what kind of tree it is growing on but there is a lot of Maple and Oak trees around the area. Hopefully not Hemlock.

Gills: No gills or pores that i could see. Yellowish underside.

Stem: Yellowish/Orange, Rubbery. Growing shelf-like 5" to 6" inches tall from base of stem to top of cap.

Cap: Dark Orange to Light Orange. Underside light yellow, Feels soft/smooth/rubbery, 14" inches across.

Spore print color: Didnt take the fungus home.

Bruising: Yellow substance when broken in half was observed but no dark bruising.

Smell: smells sweet/earthy.

Location: Southeastern Ontario,Lake Ontario, Canada.
