In the third picture just below the mycelium it looks very dark grey, bacterial, unless that’s just a shadow.... I’m a noob too but trying to help and could be wrong. Grimsweeper knows more and is probably right though.

You guys were right, I had to throw away all of my jars except the 9 BRF cakes. Those all seem to be doing well, there seems to be a contamination in one but not well formed enough to make a judgement call. I have hope for the BRF cakes but I really need to get into agar. I need to get a day off to try it.

If I could go back. I'd never do brf, I would have started with agar and never would have tried pf tek.

Yeah, I will most likely agree after I try it but I wanted to try the basics first. I really do need to get into agar ASAP though. Seems very fun!

Ordering sterile syringes and growing off of PF cakes was my first go. I viewed agar as some advanced technique, but looking back now I wish I'd started with it.

So an unfortunate update...
More than half of my jars have been invaded by maggots. Yes, maggots. I have four jars left that look fairly healthy. I think I kinda just screwed the pooch when I applied the micropore tape or when I did the holes for the syringe. Either way maggots infested my jars...
So I’m pretty bent out of shape. I put a lot into this and turns out it wasn’t enough. I’m discouraged and probably won’t try again for some time.
It’s very unfortunate because I kind of felt like I needed this in my life at this specific time but I suppose not, I’m going to get a second job and forget all about the magic in the mushrooms for another year or two. Next time I will invest in a pressure cooker and try agar from the start. Peace guys...

We popped your shroom now you're just going to turn your back and walk away after just a few dates? I feel like I just got date raped. Got to give it another go man, it's the right thing to do. Don't be date-rapey Grey6Bard.

Okay dude please describe your process a bit more. If your jars have maggots then you aren't properly sterilizing them because flys don't burrow through dry vermiculite to lay eggs. Nothing to do with your micropore tape unless you had jars with grains directly exposed to the air with no filter or barier.
I just got into this thread, can you sum up what you currently have available for good jars and bad jars? My understanding is you have 9 brf jars that are still good?
Can we see those? The more pictures you can post of all your stuff, not just the questionable jars, then the more well be able to help you salvage stuff.
I'm sorry you had to throw away jars. It's hard at first but I promise it gets easier. Also don't ever let fear of contamination keep you from trying something.
You definitely have mold in the jars with the red shit.
Dont worry about getting a picture for every single jar, just post the whole lot in one picture with any colonized areas facing forward.
Well getcha through this.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. My first grow attempt was 10 brf jars. 9 contaminated super hard. I put way too much focus on that one batch. Then I started doing one or two new batches every week because I realized I wasn't going to get better anytime soon by doing a batch a month.

I think they were gnat larvae. We have a problem with gnats in western NC and it doesn’t help that we live around livestock. It’s not terrible but at any given time I can see one or two flying around the room. The place where I tried to seal the tape didn’t seal properly on a lot of the jars, I think that’s how they got into my jars. As of right now I have 1 BRF jar that may be good. I think it’s contaminated possibly, it’s tinged a little yellow in areas. So far I see no maggots though. I also had the layer of vermiculite. All of the jars had mycelium growing but produced maggots after nearly two weeks of colonizing. I will post my last jar...hang on.

Lol, yeah I didn’t know it would hurt that bad.Quote:

It’s hard for me to do it like that. I work a lot and there are people I live with that I’d prefer not to know what’s going on so I have to time it right. Not that they would care but they’d be mad that I didn’t tell em and if I did tell em I’d have to worry about them trying to take some, lol.
Let me take a pic of the last jar that I have left.

That seperation line across the center is kinda troublesome. I'm thinking more bacteria.
How did you sterilize your jars?

I sterilized with steam in a pot for an hour and a half. I guess it just isn’t enough. I’ll have to get a PC. I don’t think I can cultivate without one.

May be prepping too wet initially? Excess moisture generally causes bacterial infection IME

Some of them were definitely too wet, it was obvious after inoculation. However some weren’t that wet just gotta get some practice down I suppose.
I really do need to try agar and get a pressure cooker.

I siccessfully ran cakes with just a pot. I would steam for 2 hours every time and I used masking tape to seal the holes while steaming. I would inject right through the tape.
