I tend to store generations of plates in the fridge whilst I'm waiting to ensure the next gen plates have taken and are clean transfers, slows their growth down a lot..Find leaving them in there for two long tends to dry them out, plus fridges aren't that clean. Look into slants for long term storage, also had good results with grain masters over a period of 12-18 months, few grains taken back to agar to clean up

Ha! So much to learn. I’ll look into slants after I get my first projects going. I should have my spores by tomorrow as they arrived in the nearest city this morning. So I imagine they will be dropped off today or tomorrow. I use a pack and ship, I hope that causes no issues.
I still won’t be able to inoculate until the rest of my equipment comes, ugh, what a bummer. I’m so stoked!!!
I feel I’ve garnered a lot of knowledge over the past week or two!

I got a little impatient, the mail is just taking too long. So I went out and picked up some vermiculite, I couldn’t find BRF so I got some WBS. Do I need to change the proportions for this third wave tek with WBS? I’m currently grinding some up and prepping my jars.
If all goes well I will inoculate them tomorrow then I may start another 12 jars with the BRF just to garner some experience with alternate variables.

You don't grind WBS. use the FooMan Tek to prep it

I’ve read that some folks do grind the WBS as a substitute when they couldn’t find any BRF. I’m gonna go through with it since I have six jars already prepped and The jars I bought are a strange shape, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get a cake out. Maybe I’ll just do all of these jars this way and use them for shoeboxes then try BRF cakes tomorrow after I get off work, my order has arrived just have to go pick it up. Anyways, If this trial doesn’t work I’m only losing out on one syringe.
I bought 8 just to experiment with different methods so no big loss.

So update on my status, I’ve inoculated 6 jars. I had planned on the girlfriend helping me but our busy schedules didn’t allow it so I felt very rushed and in my anxiousness I think I did a shit job. If I get anything from these first six jars I would be thoroughly impressed.
I’m going to try to take my time on the next batch but after this one I’m kinda let down. I had to rush through all the steps. I was anxious and actually jabbed myself with one of the syringes HA, spores in my DNA. I had to switch needles. I didn’t realize how easy you had to press the syringe and I dumped a lot of CCs into the first two jars on accident.
This first batch was a total learning experience and I botched it completely. No harm though but it was a bit frustrating especially having to rush things because of time restraints.
Total luck if I even get any mycelium to colonize. Disappointed in myself.

So you're telling me theres a chance!
I did some pretty stupid stuff when i first tried, hindsight is always 20/20 and you'll have so many things you know you can improve on next time, you should be one with the shroom now that you've been inoculated.
I've found this hobby takes patience above all else.
If some/one of those does take you may be able to speed up the next round if you're feeling bold enough for a g2g.
...I wonder if mushrooms will start to grow out of your.. *use imagination*

Yeah, I’m considering starting another six jars tonight and then on my next day off doing my first tek that I planned on doing all along. The one that I feel is the most simple and slowly so I can be more thorough. I already got these six rolling so I figure maybe I’ll just try an get em inoculated.
Maybe I’ll just try wait till my day off after all seeing as we don’t have water today, haha... Frustrating place that I live.
Oh and yeah, I’ll have the biggest penis envy.

I inoculated the other six now I’m sterilizing 9 BRF cakes!
Things are going mush smoother this time around! Haha. I except that out of 21 jars I’ll at least get one going! Lol I’ve learned a lot. Next day off I’m going to experiment with agar so here’s to nothin!

21 jars. I see something in my WBS jars, I see some strange red contamination in all six of my crushed WBS jars. Nothing yet in my BRF jars which I have the most hope for but it’s only been two days so I didn’t expect anything yet. Wish I knew how to upload pics. Will figure it out sometime soon if I get the time. I also will prob work on my agar on my next day off...Tuesday.

Think ahead to your future grain choice at this early stage and either simmer/boil or soak the grain as the agar nutrients. Strain it helps to see clearly, I recommend that. Food coloring is fun but I probably won't be using it a second time unless I start an organizational system with it.
Using the grain water from germination will encourage the strains that like your specific conditions to grow fastest. If you make a monoculture of something that already likes it's food you're presumptuously more efficient than if you didn't.
I read the teks for this, but I feel highlighting the purpose is just as important as a recipe.
You have plenty of syringes to do this with from germination, so starting sooner is always nice. Make that patience as easy as it can be.

So what tek should I begin with for agar?
I’ve got potato flakes and the powdered agar?... Will that suffice?

I’ve got Petri dishes. Do they work in the same way? I know the things he uses have holes in them. Or should I try a different tek specifically for the Petri dishes?
Also, out of 21 jars so far I find that I’ve had a higher success rate than failure rate. I’m seeing growth on over half the jars and contaminations in only 6 thus far.

Sorry for this premature bump of my thread but I’d like to share some pics and get some input.

First is my BRF cake, it’s been maybe 8 or 9 days since inoculation. The second is the ground WBS experiment. The third is just wild bird seed. I need some input on how they all look for the amount of time passed any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Grey6,
Here is a good place to start.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24297804
I recommend you look at the bottom of the op at Timethyl’s link on what it should and shouldn’t look like.
I’m not the greatest at analyzing pictures, bad screen or eyes, but they don’t look good from my angle. What did you make your BRF jars with? Why is it so white? Thinking that it couldn’t be colonized like that in 8 days.

The first pic is just BRF and vermiculite. I don’t know why the BRF looks so white but is not colonization. The other WBS jars were inoculated a couple days before the BRF and are just starting to show some mild progress in colonization. Thanks for the link, will check it out in my spare time.

I don’t think the first jar is mold but I’m a total beginner. I can’t identify anything in it but a small bit of perhaps colonization. The second does look fucked. The third looks okay. I can take more pics of other jars but I’m waiting to see some more before I show em off.
