Rhizomorphic growth? How to induce pinning?

Hey there! Long time lurker, first time grower. Just doing a small grow for myself and a friend using PF Tek. Currently doing a few TPB and Oak Ridge. I birthed my jars about a week ago, did a dunk and roll, but no pins. I've had tons of what appears to be rhizomorphic growth, but can't tell if it's that or cobweb mold. Any experts on here able to help a n00b out with some tips to induce pinning?

Looks like myc but lacking FAE..What tek have you followed, it looks like your cakes are sitting on verm? What's your container like?

Followed PF Tek. I got a little slap happy with my verm... Didn't intend to get so much in with the perlite. Part of it is terrible lighting. I have a tub with loads of holes drilled in it and about 5 inches of perlite.

Sounds about right, I've used the SGFC tech to fruit PF and trays etc
Have you got holes all the way to the bottom of the sides i.e below the perlite layer? Basic Principles of the Shotgun Fruiting Chamber
I'd clear off the verm layer that's coating the perlite under the cakes as the air should be flowing through. Have you been taking the lid off an fanning each day? Misting?

Been fanning and misting, but no holes on the bottom. Thanks for the advice! I'll add more holes and scrape away the verm. Do you think I've fucked myself on this batch, or should I still get a crop?

If you get your holes sorted and start proper FAE there is no reason you won't get a decent batch from these..Good luck and report back how you get on

I added more holes all the way around the sides of the chamber, down to the bottom. Took off the extra verm. Look better? Fanning and misting as usual.

Looking much better if you've got the airflow dialled in fanning shouldn't even be required, or at least no more than when you take the lid off to mist and give it a waft or two etc. If you have a very still room you can run a fan to generate some air currents, just not pointing at the tub..Also make sure you've got some light..and then wait

Three days and no signs of anything. Read somewhere that the holes needed to be made with around a 1/4" drill bit, so I tried widening the holes with the correct size drill bit. No changes, except maybe a little less fluffy mycelium activity. Am I paranoid or just being impatient? Fanning and misting container sides about 3-4x per day. My container is in a basement -- could light be an issue? I have shop lights on 12 hrs/day and ambient light from a couple small windows.

Yes, it will more than likely require up to 2 weeks since you just dialed in your conditions by correctly drilling the holes per the tek. Patience. Mist the cakes lightly every now and again and make sure the perlite is hydrated. Donβt over-care for it.

90% chance you're impatient. some shrooms just grow when they damn well feel like it.

Haha, figured as much. Thanks for the confirmation. Since it's my first grow I'm utterly terrified of fucking anything up and wasting all this time/effort/money. Plus my depression is getting really bad and I'm hoping to be able to start microdosing soon to see if that helps a bit.

Starting to make some serious progress! Probably 50+ pins, growing fast. Thanks for being so lovely and giving me such great advice. The fruiting chamber is starting to smell a bit like maple syrup -- is that weird? Humidity seems good, evaporation is great.

Sweet smell can indicate bacteria, try and avoid standing water in the bottom

Kind of only makes sense... mushrooms and mycelium are aerobic organisms that require oxygen for healthy growth

Thanks to you guys, I managed to get five flushes and I've started microdosing! My depression has been vastly improved already. THANK YOU so much! You are rockstars!
