    #2546980 - 04/10/04 06:41 PM (19 years, 11 months ago)

Here is whut I'm werking on. Consists of 1/2mdf board, a 24x16x2", some angle. Its an in progress job. Doing the lid/hinge maybe tonite. Then mount the fan box on top. I have an 8"dayton which should run like hell. Its all gunna be painted white of cladded in zinc,( if i feel really ambitious.
Check it out. I'll keep updating it when I have done more.

Here is the latest update. Hinge to top on, and fan bolted onto top. Still needs a gasket, and gastet tape around the outside edge. Need to house the fan to with a prefilter on top.

And then this unit i set up this morning. Has an intake fan on the top, blowing in through a miocro filter. ^ exhaust holes thru polyfill, and a tropicaire humidifier feeding moisture. Must get perlite for the bottom, and possibly another air stone if the humidity doesn't get high enuff.

I just cut the hole and routered all the edges so they aren't all sharp and vicious. Next will be to house the fan and add the pre filter. Then the base.

Have a look.

>560 cfm

Free flow? Then the chances are it?s not enough at the static pressure of the filter.
But you will feel if it blows or not.

According to this example I should have plenty of cfm for the filter.
1. Find out the area of your filter by multiplying the width and the hight in feet (for instance the smallest reasonably usable filter would be 2ft x 1ft)

2ft x 1ft = 2 ft2

2. Multiply the required air speed(the one Stamets specifies) with the area of your filter

100 ft/min x 2 ft2 = 200 ft3/min

So my filter is 24"x16"x2"

Now whut kind of resistance does depth play in this role. I think I am well over requirements. BUt hey, I have been wrong before. So i have 560 cfm blowing through this filter.

YES NO???

Thanks

K, so i tested it. After the fan is housed, there will be a tighter seal around everything creating more pressure. puts out an ice flow. Not to crazy fast, but not too low that i can feel it. I know it will be enuff. Thanks for the concern, it really made me think and double check.

OK.

A big one, but it?s impossible to say without knowing the data of your filter.

As you see now , you have much less blowing through the filter, more towards the required 200 cfm which is ok though.
You can visualize the flow by placing an incense stick or a cigarette in the air flow.

Right on, I still more work to do to ioncrease the flow, This box is going to sit like the sci lab flowhoods. The filter will be poited down onto of the working surface. I will create a plexiglass front that is off the table about 8 inches. Enuff to stick my hands under and work. This will create more of a funnel effect inside the work area. I test the box by laying the box ontop of my table, layed the box a little over the edge of the table and there is serious air flow coming out of it. Gimme a little more time and I'll have it finished soon.

Update.
K, finally finished painting it for the most part, little touch ups here and there. 2 coats of paint, then I sanded it down abit, then another 2 coats of paint. Eggshell paint, easiest to clean, and has water resistant properties. Next will be to attatch the fan, and top, and also the fan housing which I'll put a 12x 12 prefilter. maybe a 24x12. Any recommendation?

Anyway, its almost there. Its getting to be pretty heavy duty. I will make it werkable to fit a squirrel cage if need be.

How about a cost of materials report? I know that you traded for that filter, but are those rectangular filters and cheaper than cylindrical filters? Thanks.
