Is this still a good tek? I'd like to try it as a first or second try, maybe after one successful pf tek.

Nice. Thanks. I was also looking at shoebox tek as it seems beginner friendly.

So I would like to use your methode. I have two three pound bags that are fully colonized. Is this the same as 5 QT of spawn? Should I double the recipe for coir and verm? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You could make 1 tub with both of those 3 pound bags and this method. Or you could make 2 tubs with 1 bag each and split this coir recipe between the 2 tubs.

What risks would I run from using 3 quarts of spawn instead of 5? Would I just have a few days longer colonization time or would I significantly increase the chance of contaminates growing?
I have 7 pint jars currently and I want to use 6 as spawn and then do a G2G with my other jar so that I can set up a second monotub a few weeks after- I could just g2g all the jars and set up 2 monos at once but I would prefer to both stagger my harvests and also get a flush more quickly.
Edit: This is unrelated but everyone keeps saying one brick is 650 grams, but I just purchased 4 bricks that weigh a combined 2.1 lbs- or around 240 grams each so make sure to weigh them before you just assume a brick is 650 grams.

It would just take a few days longer. Also, those jars you plan to G2G to would be ready in just a few days most likely

Dude, you are good. We really speak in general terms. 600g brick, 650g brick. It's not going to make a fuck of a difference, really. I've done 3 quarts water. I've done 4 quarts water. I've added as much verm as I wanted to add based on looks alone. It works out in the end.
With lower spawn ratios it just takes a little more time.

what type of thermometer do you use to check the temp of the coir/verm mix after you let it sit?

You don't need a thermometer. Just stick your hand in and feel the temp. If its hot, let it sit longer. If it's comfortable to you then it'll be fine for your spawn.
But if you absolutely wanted to check temp then a normal food thermometer works well. The longer the better for getting into the center of whatever your checking.

The just looking in the bucket and seeing what's up and never bothering with a thermometer one. otherwise the any kind that you could stick in there kind would work

Should you remove the lid when you're introducing this to light? Or keep the lid sealed, just take it out of the bag?

The bag is old info. Don't even bother with it. Leave the lid on, snapped down or not. According to this tek you want to let it sit undisturbed until fully colonized. A lot of people nowadays are flipping the lid upside down as soon as they spawn and allowing some FAE right away and having good results.

Depending on your brand of coir it makes around 9-11 quarts of substrate.

Yay! I did one run with the old Home Depot bucket method which I'm sure didn't get hot enough and I did another in an oven bag in the oven. I know the center of the bag hit 170 degrees and stayed there for a few hours. It will be interesting to see if there is an actual difference in results when you properly pasturize.

not with coir, it doesnt matter/care.
try that with a manure based substrate and you will see the difference 100%.
thats why we can get away with just dumping really hot water over coir and letting it hydrate in a bucket, because it doesnt matter with coir substrates unless you put additives in it like coffee grounds etc. you can add gypsum and verm if you want to the coir because they are minerals and they dont harbor contaminates.

Pretty noob question here... I have 4 1/2 pint BRF jars that are 90% colonized that I plan on spawning to a 6 qt. Shoebox while I wait for the rest of my jars (50-75%) to catch up. My question is, is it okay to leave the coir verm mix sit in the bucket with the lid on until the rest of the jars are ready? If not, how much C/V mixture should I prepare assuming I want a 1:1 ratio (1 qt. spawn, 1 qt. C/V with a light casing layer?) what weight of Coir, how much verm, how much water? Apologies if this has been answered before. Also apologies for my inability to maths correctly.
