Noob first inoculation. Is this mycelium ?

Hi guys. So i think i got my first little buddy to show up. Only one lol
Don't see anything on the outside but this one. I know they're cultivating from inside out (i hope);
But wanted some confirmation comments that's mycelium not cobweb and if it's healthy growth so far or too early to tell?
BTW this is day 6. It's 3 lbs bag of 5 grain spawn from MGK. Hoping there is more on the inside i can't see. Thoughts?
P.S You may need to move scroll bar to the right as it's big pic to see this single one buddy.

Looks good to me. Cobweb is 'whispier' and more grey than myc white. Congrats!

Thanks. I injected 4cc so it's plenty. Just hoping there is more on the inside that i can't see as if not this is going to take a longggggg time.
It's slow. I'm just hoping its not just this one grain that's growing. It's 7 days in now and that's the only one i see. Nothing more. It's actually my worry now.
I will go with jars next time as that's smaller batch processing so growth is faster and separates rye to give you more security of contamination too. I was thinking about doing jars but greed in my and economics of big bag won me over. I just learned another lesson. Smaller is better then bigger.
At this pace from day one to final day i see it 2 months. Kinda long. lol

Guys i have few questions if you can help me out i would greatly appreciate it.
1. My temperatures are almost always 78-86F, little high but i don't know how to lower it without running ac all day. If myc can grow i don't wanna i add electrical bill just for that.
2. I was actually looking at the bag and i don't see any humidity, no droplets inside the bag. It's pretty dry since this bag was cooked before shipping obviously and i don't see much mycelium to crate humidity? Is this dryness normal at day 7-8?
3. Should i lock this bag into tub to create humidity but then temp will increase substantially due to lack of air flow.

1. I would keep your house 65-75 just for the sake of the woodwork and everything else.
2. You can't see humidity. Condensation has little to do with humidity. Condensation happens from temperature difference and occurs even at low humidity. Humidity inside a bag or jar is basically irrelevant anyway. Grain prep is important.
3. Putting it in a tub won't do anything for the "humidity" of the bag. And it certainly won't be helping anything locking it in a tub

When you inoculated that bag did you squirt the spores all over or did you go down the center? I am assuming by the growth being on the outer part of the bag that you squirted the spores all over. Next time squirt down the center that way all the spores are in one localized spot and the spores can find a mate easier and faster. This will speed up colonization time. If you did go down the center then you are just not seeing the growth because it is mostly in the center of the bag. What I see looks good. Once that bag is fully colonized make up some grain jars and do G2G transfer. I would do at least 12 jars. A couple table spoons eyeballed is all you need for each jar. Use the rest for your grow. That will put you way ahead when you need more grain spawn.
Going down the center also helps you to know when the bag is done because the growth started in the middle when the outside is fully colonized wait a couple more days and you are good to go.

I injected 4cc down the middle and then after i flipped the bag few times to spread it around all over the grain. That is why this one stranger is on very outside.
Was that a mistake to do? Is it still going to colonize?

A lot of folks don't shake after innoculating with syringe, and inmoculate where germination can be observed, then around 30% (norm, so long as there's enough to spread efficiently) mix it thoroughly... this has the added advantage of identifying contamination sooner

It will colonize fine. I would not flip the bag in the future. This way all the spores are in one spot straight down and can find a mate easier. This speeds up colonization in my opinion. You can also mark a spot on the bag with a marker and shoot spores down the side of the bag as stated above. This may show contamination sooner. But in my opinion it slows down colonization because the mycelium only has one way to grow from and that is away from the bag. Spores that are placed in the center have 360 degrees to grow out from. But I would do in the center or against the bag and do not shake the bag unless you enjoy waiting longer. From what I can see in the pic. You have healthy myceliuum so All this time can be avoided by buying some grains one of these (whole oats, rye berries or rye grain same thing, milo or millet). Then do G2G transfers you should never need another syringe. But this is only if you want to save time and money and plan on growing for awhile. Anyway I am here to help IM me if you need any help.

What is G2G transfer? Sorry i'm new here and this term and this technique is not familiar to me? I don't have any jars yet either. Do you have a link to method you're referring to?
For method I was thinking of using BOD's Easy AF UnBODified Monotub TEK (No Holes No Polyfil) method as it's low maintenance. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22337800
I thought after it colonizes it's ready to be layered into pasteurized substrate (i have coco and verm). BTW i'm just planing to pour boiling water into coco and same with verm to pasteurize it. I was told that's enough?
Here is the setup. I only colonized one 3 lbs 5 grain bag. That's it. I have one brick of coco (8qrts) and i think it's 2 lbs bag of verm (8qrts) The other 3 lbs bag of grains is in fridge and not used. Still have 6cc of spores in fridge also.
Is this 3 lbs myc rye going to be enough for 32 qts tub? I was thinking to keep the other one in case i screw up somehow or get contamination. With 3 flushes i think that will be plenty?
Thinking of using 1" bottom layer of verm, then middle rye with myc and then on top 1" of coco and some verm. Verm and coco soaked in water. Is this 3 lbs of myc be enough to layer in?
I'm thinking of getting petri dishes and agar next time if it can help with time. If you can help with any suggestions with my setup thank you in advance.
BTW I can only inject from that one spot so not sure how to do what u said it's better. Here is how those bags look like.

Here's a good G2G tek Grain to grain in a SAB
Watch the spawning to bulk vid, as there are no layers as such Spawning to bulk in a monotub
As for the amount of spawn, 2lbs is roughly 1qt so unlikely to be enough. What are the dimensions of the tub?

The above post by Shroomspective has a tek for G2G. I didn't go through it but it looks like it has the basic idea. You will need a still air box or a Flow hood and I am sure you don't have a flow hood at this point. So look up still air box and build one make sure your tote is as high as one you can find so you don't have a problem using it. You are going to want to get a pressure cooker at some point also. I you have one before you do the G2G transfer wrap a table spoon in aluminum foil and pressure cook it for 30 mins at 15 psi. Doing this will make the spoon sterile enough to use for the G2G transfer. Otherwise it will be very hard to get the grains from bag to jars. You might have a few jars contaminate. Don't worry a half of a jar is more than enough for an 8 pound bag of grains. then when you get to your last jar just use it for 12 more jars.
As far as this tek goes... https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22337800
I do not understand how it works and can not say what the results would be.
I can however say that a regular 5 quart mono tub with polyfill stuffed in the holes is what I use to use. I had 6 tubs going and would get at least 5 oz dry from each tub. I had mine set up like this to save space...

I would stick with the proven mono tube if it was me!
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17332777#17332777
I found my old post on how I did my mono tubs I used 1 1/2 pvc and hot glued them in. to make it a little easier to dial in. you only need about an inch of pvc for each hole if you go this route.

I figured I might as well add the coir tek I used...

Many of us have been introducing "fruiting conditions" at spawn ,in unmodified tubs with the lid flipped with excellent results :
Here's a great tek used by many... EVERYTHING else from prints, agar, grain prep etc

Ahhh great. That spawn to bulk video helped a lot. That's what i'm going to do at first try. I want to keep it simple. The more variables i introduce the more errors i can make and i would rather have lower yield then no yield.
So it's 3 lbs grain bag which comes out to 1.44 qts. So i did math based on that video. Video used 54 qts container. Mine is 32 qts so mine is 60% of the that container. So i multiplied everything by 60%. 1 coco coir 1 lbs brick so that's enough for my 32 qts tub. I have 1 lbs verm bag too.
My tub is Sterilite 32qts /30L / 18.5 L x 14 7/8 W x 11 1/8 H.
I will have less then 50% short on spawn but it will be 3 flushes so i don't need huge yield. I just need to yield enough. I still have 2nd 3 lbs bag in the fridge with 6cc spores left too. I was keeping that for emergency situation of contamination of first bag. I can pull this out but now i'm 10 days behind on second bag so timing will be off now.
I'm thinking instead of mixing all this up like in video just make first 1" layer of coir then cover this with spawn all over the first layer then put 2" layer of coir on top of spawn layer. That way i have even distribution and spawn doesn't end it in weird places like corner of the box which won't be optimal. What do u guys think of this? This also will help i think with not enough spawn being there?
Or make first layer 2" then spawn then 1" on top? That will give it more light penetration too? Thoughts guys? Thank you to all u guys for tips.

The first link I provided is a tek for 32 and 54qt tubs... stupid simple too
Also, some easy substrate calculations for determining the amount of spawn and sub needed for a given set of tub dimensions, at a given spawn to sub ratio

Thanks boss. Great info. So much info on spawn calculator. If you can suggest something it would be greatly appreciated but i will read that. It's just lots of info here all at once so it's too much to compute at one seating.
Can i use perlite and sprinkle it on top of the very top layer of coir to keep humidity high in the tub? I will still be misting but this may help in humidity control? Has anyone tried that?
I'm thinking of ditching the verm and just using coco coir. Thoughts?
Is coco coir better then verm or do they have different functions? I saw some ppl using mixture of both so hence my question.

Thank you all guys. I inoculated second bag as obviously as you guys pointed out that i'm way too short on spawn. I will have 3 qts (6 lbs) of spawn hopefully if everything goes well. I think that will be enough. I'm not going for record amount and maybe if i'm lucky cubes will surprise me. I just need it to work hehe.
At very worst i can always get a smaller tub but since when more space for cubes is worst then less space hehe.
This time i put 1cc in the center and 1cc in each corner on the inside, 3cc total. Made a needle hole from top and sprinkled 1ccx2 on very top. I did not shake the bag this time so we will see the result between those two bags how they turn out. Did same also on first bag 1cc on top to see if it's actually doing anything and have different inoculation point.
So each 3 lbs bag now has 5cc of spores injected. I did shake in circular motion (like a centrifuge) the syringe also before inoculation to get even distribution on the inside. If that doesn't inoculate those bags then there is something wrong with those spores i got. I did clear surface with alcohol and then sealed the hole with tape. I also cleaned rubber stopper with alcohol and sealed it with tape too. Just to be OCD about it.
What do u guys think about verm? Should i just use coir brick and ditch the verm or is verm actually useful? What about putting some perlite inside on very top layer to increase humidity?
I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel but i guess i'm not fully understand what all those substrates do well and why some ppl mention perlite (3hr video) and some don't bother to use it. To be honest i'm more curious about perlite then verm but would rather ask then mess it up.

I've used verm... didn't really see a difference... coir only is cheaper and eliminates a step/vector for contamination... if you've got it and can't put to use in compost or gardening, use it so it doesn't go to waste... but it's not necessary or beneficial IMO/E... Proper feild capacity won't need much added water before first flush harvest, and can be dunked afterwards to minimize misting for subsequent flushes... I wouldn't put perlite in the substrate; may end up inadvertently eating some with your fruit

Guys so the first bag i started a week earlier then second, very top is still not colonized but i already see stem of mushroom on the side trying to grow/fruit. Bag is 6 weeks into it colonization. I'm assuming let it fully colonize.
Would i bury this mushroom stem in substrate one the top fully colonizes? I'm assuming mushroom will brake the bag at come point maybe even before the bag is fully colonized.
My second bag (4 weeks in) needs more time too and also mycelium is sort of thin, not very fluffy thick white. Sort of transparent white. Thank you kindly for advice.

Fruiting prior to full colonization is indicative of contamination... if it's a proper bag, mush won't tear it... second one sounds like a weak culture, could be genetics or contamination as well... pictures are worth more than words

You could try to spawn it... you might get fruit, but you could also end up losing more time and resources ... either way, I'd start something fresh and prep your grain a good bit dryer

Many thanks. Should i wait until top is fully colonized before braking the cake and bulk box spanning? Or perhaps spawn in the bag?
I'm going to be doing 32qt box and will pasteurize coir in the cooler. Will coir help in keeping bacteria in check? I need some fruit out of this investment. It's really not about money but time to be honest.
It's 6 weeks in and it's not done colonizing yet. Looks like it will need another 2 weeks, 8 total plus whatever it takes for fruiting.
It would be good for me to understand what went wrong, otherwise i will be hard for me to learn from whatever happened, which i don't know what really went wrong?

That top will probably not colonize... I'd try to remove the majority of it bc it's likely harboring bacteria... I think you loaded the grain too wet ... I'd start something else, and not count on this TBH... I doubt it does much, if anything ... spawn should colonize within 2 weeks IMO/E

I bought those bags not made them myself so no noob error here from me. So if they were prepared incorrectly it was a supplier that did not properly did them.
Here is few more pics. This is the other bag that has top fully colonized but bottom is not as it was compacted and there was not a log of gas exchanges. So i'm flipping the jar (a bag) so do speak and let the gasses exchange.
Both bags are 85% colonized with mycelium. At 3rd week i had i grain colonized so it's very very slow but's it's colonizing. Perhaps strain was weak or my 80-90 temps slowed it down a bit.
Mostly i had 80-90F temp and now temps dropped to 70-80F so perhaps that triggered pinning as i read here that temp drops trigger pinning. I'm seeing more and more pins now but they're very small.
I will spawn this with coir in box regardless of outcome to learn and get few fruits so i'm not tossing this. One it will help me learn, two until i see green mold or other sign sign of contamination i have no proof it is, just speculation which is NOT enough to take any adverse action and abort. Logical action IMO.
Question becomes do i let it fully colonize, maybe wait for that second bag pictured here for bottom to colonize then pull it or pull it now and get rid of un-colonized grain but that will mean less spawn. I'm short on spawn by 1-2qts as is, meaning with full colonization i will still be short which i'm ok with as yield will be what it will be and i'm ok with that.
Thing i'm wondering here is if 85% myclium is seen it's winning so why not let it fight it's battle? In nature environment is way more dirty. I'm not seeing any contamination. Just pure white healthy myclium. Just it's painfully slow growth.
This is other bag where top is fully colonized but bottom is not yet. I just flipped it to the side and exposed to ambient light / fluorescent 6500k bulb too to direct myclium toward the light. I'm not sure on this either lol. But uncolonized part was in complete darkness as it was on bottom, hence my logic.
I will be using BOD's Easy AF UnBODified Monotub TEK (No Holes No Polyfil) Tek so do i bury those pins in coir substrate when i break up this break into smaller grains and mix them with coir evenly? I'm not sure what to do with those pins, bury them in coir along with broken up cake?
Thoughts? This is second bag with bottom still to colonize but but top fully colinized

This is first bag with top still to colonize but bottom is fully colonized.

This one is 6 weeks sir. Other one 8 weeks. Its rye juice that drained to very bottom with gravity.
Isn't that normal from cooking it and then moisture inside the bag causing this? Should i drain this with needle and siringe?
The other bag is fully colonized on bottom but top looks dry.

Rye doesn't emit "juice" that's hardcore bacteria and i dont even know what. Now granted, a certain level of external moisture is to be expected with that much myc running but nothing like that. It definitely should not be taking 6 weeks to colonize to that point either bud. That's why it's fruiting, it's been battling for the grain. This leads me to conclude it is caused by one or more of these variables:
1. Cleanliness needs improved. Either sterilization wasn't long enough or your inoculation procedure was dirty
2. Grain was way too wet Which can lead to this much bacteria after that much time elapsed
3. Temps were too high Can easily favor any bacteria present and cause it to prosper
Does any of this match your situation?
Also, what was your method of inoculation?

From the looks of it now it seems that grain was too wet. It looked dry AF when i got the bags unless inside was wet and not visible from outside.
It's also possible the syringe culture was already contaminated so when injected it contaminated the rye. I've had slow growth from day 1.
The procedure i posted in first post but i follow instructions so doubt it was the procedure. It's pretty straight forward.
Ok so what's the rescue plan here. The first cake is dry and hard as rock but top still has not covered with myclelium. That's the one that's fruiting and almost 2 week older then second cake. I think this one is ready i think?
Second cake when i touch the bottom is wet. Top and sides are good. This one is not ready as i suspect inside is still wet.
Is there way to dry this wetness like on heating unit or something?
Since myc is winning since 85% is colonized it should win yes?
Lets say i take good parts and cut out bad parts and spread it in COCO COIR. COCO is antimicrobial so bacteria will NOT grow in there and mycelium will thrive in there. Problem solved no???
What do i do with those mush pins, bury them in coco coir. They should just break threw the sub anyway as that's what their job is yes?

Coir is more resistant to molds due to a high lignin content, it is by no means antimicrobial. If it were we couldn't use it.
If there's bacteria at the bottom chances are the already colonized parts have bacteria throughout it as well, so don't expect spawning what is "seemingly" good myc out of those bags to another sub to get you out of the rough.
There is no way to fix what is already there. That's why we put so much diligence into the proper procedures in the first place, once it's fucked it's fucked and you're looking into save your ass techniques if and where possible.
Your best bet in trying to salavage this is separate the colonized parts from the heavily bacterial soupy parts and fruit as a cake. Going to be difficult at this point, you're gonna have to carve into the myc.
..& pray for it lol
Overall I recommend starting fresh and prepare your own stuff, that way you begin learning how to do it right and what it looks like when everything is as it should be, firsthand.

Thank you for clearing this up for me.
I'm in disbelief that both bags are garbage.
I will not use another bag. I will stick with jars. More expensive but ur not losing entire material. I will need to save 4g dry out of this thing.
I'm still thinking about cutting out bad stuff and putting this in the coir and let it play out. Let them battle.
Can you think of any links for spanning this as cake?

Spawning and fruiting as a cake are different. If you spawn that to coir you're going to spread the bacteria again. Just cut the bottom off and fruit the cake. Hell you could even fruit from the bag like it is since it's already begun. That heavy of bacterial presence means it wouldn't last long either way

Thank you. Any links to the easy dummy proof tek to fruit the cake?
I want to take this out of the bag and cut off the dry part out if it didn't colonize by now (8 wks).
I will start over with jars. I just need at the minimum 5g dry out of this cake which should be easy to accomplish.

Throw it in a SGFC with some foil underneath. Use the search bar to find how to build and run one, sgfc is the most common thing to use for new cultivators. 5g is probable being how much is already colonized however not guaranteed.

A human processed them(human error still a factor)... they want your money and could care less the level of sterility... no telling how long they sit before you order, then it ships to you and is handled by countless others... you'll have higher chances of success prepping in house, even with noob mistakes IMO
80-90 temps are much more favorable to contaminants, and full colonization and FAE are pinning triggers... temp drops are for some species, but not cubes... 65-75 temps throughout the grow...

Thank you very much guys. I gave it some thought and i opened the bags as they were hopeless in those bags i think. It was a war in there. That one bag stunk and i gagged. I cut all that shit out. Saw some mold in there too. Got rid of that as well.
I'm going for it guys. I sprayed entire tote with lysol for a minute and they wiped it with paper towel to disinfect humans touching it from store.
100% coir. Properly hydrated (i think) 3in mixed well. Very thin top layer just pure coir. No exposed grains. No Mycelium on very top to keep it clean. I made an error however. I didn't pasteurize coco. We'll see if it holds up. 6500k Fluorecent shop light on mechanical timer.
I was hoping that probe will also measure humidity inside but it's only temp probe Displayed humidity is indoor. Should i put this thing inside????
Edit: I cleaned the probe with lysol and placed it inside the tote, otherwise i have no idea what humidity is is. Humidity currently is 86% and raising. Will need to check it in few hours. What the humidity range should be?
Anyone want to take a guess win of bust and what % you giving it succeeds. I'm sorry. I just had to try it. We'll see what happens. All i'm wasting at this point is half a coir brick. Not a big deal.
Also do u guys every use Hydrogen peroxide to clean mold spots if they develop. I read 35% cleans it well and does not hurt mycylium. I wonder if it can be added to substrate if one sees mold develop? Thoughts? Take them bets guys. Will i fail miserably?
Current humdity 90% now, temp 75F. Substrate is 3in even. I thought it was close to 4 but it isn't. Oh well. I don't think i had enough spawn for that much coir anyway so this may actually work out well.
I think i read lid should be closed for 2 days to maintain high humidity and let mycylium colonize substrate. If thats not correct please correct me.

I don't monitor temp or rh... especially with spawn ... once mixed to bulk, allow full colonization and the development of surface moisture (1-2 days later) and then simply maintain a fine mist on the surface, being sure to allow evaporation to occur between mistings to stimulate pinning and avoid over-saturating the substrate

Thanks guys. Thoughts on progress based on new pics i just uploded.
What kind of yield should i expect?
I'm keeping temps right on 75F and humidity is 100% (high it shows) as it can not show anything higher then 100.
I mist first thing in the morning and last thing before i go to bed.

A good goal is one dry ounce per quart of spawn first flush harvest... I wouldn't be misting at all yet, as surface moisture will develop on it's own 1 or 2 days after full colonization, and then only mist when needed: never on a schedule... excess moisture will slow and even stall, while increasing favorable conditions for contaminants... rh meters are basically useless, as they do little to indicate microclimate conditions at the surface: concentrate on (after full colonization and the development of surface moisture) maintaining surface moisture, but allowing evaporation to occur between mistings to stimulate pinning and avoid over-saturating the substrate... looking fair so far, days from spawn?

5 days from days myc got mixed into coir. Mycelium looks wet little bit. Should i remove the lid to dry it a bit at least on surface or just stop misting for few days?
I regret not doing 50/50 coir/verm as verm would better keep moisture proper i think yet?
I'm not sure if it's too wet but mushrooms like moisture. I'm open to suggestions.

Just leave it alone... Maintain conditions by walking away another 3-5 days (look, don't touch) verm really not as helpful as it's put off to be IMO/E, and would suspect the sub a little wet due to obsessive misting... no drastic measures, just let it do it's thing... They need (and even benefit from IMO) very little of your input

Thank you. The growth has slowed down on the surface but inside the coir its still going on. The coir has dried up a bit as well. It use to be dump (properly hydrated) and now it's barely moist on the surface at least. On the inside obviously i don't know.
I didn't use tap but distilled water for purification reasons and not to introduce any other substances.
Should i add hydrated lime into my next tote growth? , as i'm not counting this one as successfully regardless what happens.
I'm getting side pins tho. Those mushrooms for some reason like to be pinned against tote. I have one or two on the bottom as well ...wtf is wrong with them. Up fools up.

I use coir only and despise additives: getting side pins because surface conditions aren't favorable
Tap water is fine, you spawned in open air and your substrate is already full of contaminants from that day forward

What do u mean i spawned in open air? How else would one do it?
Those mushrooms grown in forest full of contaminants everywhere, in fact they grow out of cow dung, also full of contaminates, bacteria and the most foul substrate can exist. I'm not following.
