Harvested too late
    #25466573 - 09/17/18 10:00 AM (2 years, 7 months ago)

Hey guys, I went on vacation for three days and came back to a couple mushrooms that had fully opened and dropped their spores everywhere. I'm kinda new to cultivation and wanted to know if I can still eat these? I washed the spores off before starting the drying process. My second question is will eating the spores cause any adverse health effects? I just keep thinking of my extreme allergies to mold and mold produce spores which is what makes me feel shitty. So is it okay to eat these even if I didn't wash them and they had spores on them still?

Anyway, any input would be appreciated:

They're safe to consume.

The spores were up in the caps anyways, now they're just in other places.  If the spores were going to affect your allergies I don't think it would matter if they were inside the caps or ON the stipes/caps.

You didnt need to wash them but some people say the spores taste worse than the mushroom.

Why would spores pose a health risk? Any time you breathe you are inhaling tons of spores. Eating at an outdoor bbq?? Spores galore.

Why do noobs always think spore dropped shrooms are somehow unsafe/not good??

If they are going to get fucked up its because one of the caps is sitting in water in one of those photos :facepalm3:

DO NOT WASH THEM!!!!!

THEY MAY ROT BEFORE THEY DRY!!!!

You can wash them off. Unless you're drying the wrong way there's no possible way they could rot before they dry.

Probably just because they're not as pretty, mush. I'd think the same (am noob) if I hadn't read it a hundred times.

When I was a kid we thought the shrooms with the "black" caps were extra potent and could potentially give you a bad trip.

Now I know they were just covered in spores. Hahaha..

You live and you learn.

You can wipe spores off of a mushroom cap with a Qtip. It works surprisingly well. Or even a small paintbrush will work sometimes. The paintbrush will knock off the dirt and stuff from the base of the stems too.

A drop of Cold water on top of a cap and then let the spores drop. Keep it covered with a cup and onto of foil. After 2 hours or so you will see a bunch of spores on the foil. I do this in the fridge to prevent rot. Then I dry mushroom after collecting as many spores as possible. No reason not to have extra spores

Taking prints in your fridge is terrible practice. Your fridge is likely filthy, even if it's clean. Take prints in a SAB or something similar.

Fridges have air currents. Who takes prints with a breeze going??

Is that dedicated fridge brand new? Even so, anyone who's worked in fridge repair knows how moldy and dirty they can get in just a few months. Regardless of what's stored inside.

I place the mushroom top onto foil, then a cup over it. place in a sealed bag and store.
It is a dedicated new mini fridge.

It's a pointless practice imo. The caps won't rot over 24hrs.

I'd rather store beer, cultures and snacks inside a mini:awedance:
