I recently bought a mexican cubensis grow kit (the ones that are completely ready for use, no syringes or anything). I just took the lid off, sprayed the top with water and put it in a tupperware box filled with water, and a aquarium heater to keep it warm. I did not steralise any of the materials, I did not think this would matter, as I have not touched the top layer. Temprature is around 28c in the water and I put a lid on the box to give it some humidity. After 4 days, I've got the white fluffy stuff on the top layer, but if I look at the side if the container, I can see yellow stuff with some green stuff on it. It looks more like slime than mould, but could be wet mold.
I very pissed off, as this kit cost me $50
Question is, if the bad stuff stays under the surface and the shrooms look fine when finished, are they safe to eat???
Those grow kits are bins with pre colonized mycelium and a top layer, aka casings. If you have mold growing in that casing then it's probably lost. You can try extracting that contaminated area but all the harm is already done as you didn't use proper methods, specially regarding sterilization procedures and other precautions. Don't use any kind of water, means use destilled water, sterilized water or h2o2:water solution. Also, that swimming pool idea with the heater is very risky and it's something you want to avoid. Use perlite if you're not getting a decent Rh level or use a smaller terrarium but don't use any kind of water. The idea with those grow kits is to allow the kit condensation to supply the needed Rh, smaller terrariums can do the trick, as the variable regarding cubic space is reduced. Regarding the mold, i don't think you can do something about it. Maybe you should start all over again. Sorry ....
