how do you make sure your flowhood is laminar? does it even have to be?

I have had trouble making my flowhood laminar, i recently contacted an engineer i knew and asked their advice on various common designs, they stated that none of the designs would truly guarantee laminar flow unless there was an air straightener, or it was just a feature of the filter. designs where the air flow in is perpendicular to the direction it leaves the filter would almost never have flow laminar, both in the X and Y, one might be fairly consistent but not both.

Knowing this, i look at my flowhood which is uneven due to the fact the motor in the fan is not perfectly centered, resulting in the top of the filters flow being greater than the bottom, yet it still works perfectly, havent had any contaminations, is laminar flow really important? Like true laminar flow, where its PERFECT. I understand that having it more or less consistent is better than not, but is it functionally absolutely neccesary to have actual laminar flow? or just faily consistent laminar flow? i.e have i just been lucky up until now?

There is no reason why in any design they should output properly laminar flow without anything to direct the air or straighten it, only the air filter, designs where the fan blows straight into the filter would be best but so, so many dont do this, they have a fan on the top at a right angle perpendicular to the filter.
Anyway i just really want to make sure im doing this right.
If not, other than changing the location of the air intake to the box how should i straighten out the air? ive literally never seen a design that attempted to diffuse the air before it hits the HEPA.

that doesnt say what the angle of the in vs out or even address being laminar other than how to check if it is. Ive since learned theres a specific reason why fans arent pointed directly at the fan, that tek didnt address the fact.
Im not talking about how to determine if the flow is laminar, how do you MAKE it laminar, whats the next step you take when your holding your flame in the flow and it doesnt pass that test? again, if it even matters.

According to what ive read, without a rectangular hood in front of your flow hood, its not even possible to have properly laminar flow out anyway, perhaps right in front of the filter yes, but near the edges and further away it becomes turbulent. Anyway theres just a lot of conflicting information out there, mostly the fact its called a laminar flowhood but 90% probably dont qualify as truly laminar.
