Is my Substrate contaminated ?
    #25451166 - 09/11/18 12:25 AM (2 years, 7 months ago)

This is my First time attempting to grow mushrooms . I'm growing Golden teachers. The substrate consists of corn , coco coir , used ground up coffee and vermiculite. I think I'm seeing some green patches of trichoderma in my mono tub .
However I'm not completely sure .
Hoping that it isnt the case though.
Are my eyes deceiving me or is my substrate contaminated ?

Trich is forest green. I don't see that here. However, this doesn't look good. A better quality picture of the suspected spot(s) may help.

I would ditch the coffee next time. It is prone to contamination in substrates.  If you would like to use coffee you should use a little in your water when hydrating your grains.

Thank you for replying. You were right . I had to throw the whole substrate out. I started over .

Hi Wing , the tub was contaminated so I ended up throwing it out . Flies started to infest the mono tub . I have a coco coir , vermiculite and used coffee mix left over in a bucket , but Im going to throw it out. I read on here that coffee can be very acidic and tricky to use. I started a couple of new corn jars with liquid culture . 3 are doing well , 1 is moist so I added some verm (might not make it) and 2 got contaminated . Thanks for taking the time out to reply .

It looks like your spawn was contaminated or just poorly prepared resulting in them being poorly colonized. See how so many of the kernels look shiny and naked instead of mycelium sprouting from them? That leaves them vulnerable to molds after spawning. They should have looked fuzzy again after only a couple days.
