Will be leaving Tuesday to hike and camp for 24 days. * 1
    #25363618 - 08/03/18 04:52 AM (5 years, 5 months ago)

This should be interesting.  What is the longest anyone has done such a journey?

Mine will be from Ashland Oregon and the forests to up and down the mountains to Truckee California overlooking Lake Tahoe, where there is still snow there now and where I started this Pacific Crest Trail two years ago.  Way overpacked and gave up after a week.  This time around a lot smarter, nothing beats experience.  Nothing is as precious as water, lol.

Reading Walden and shit.  Getting me revved up for it.

This is going to be epic.

Hope everyone has enjoyed their summer.  You only get so many to enjoy in a lifetime.  Winters suck.  Going to fly into Medford and hit the marijuana store and buy a couple of joints and it is so relaxed as there isn't a hurry.  A night in a motel and partying, then on to Ashland, and the trail is nearby.  And I know the terrain when I get close to the Truckee.

I love how I have planned this fucker out.  Fly in for $200,  Amtrack back home from Truckee for $62.  If you have the gear already it is so cheap.  It is strange in a 350 mile radious you can go from Medford that has hit record highs of 102 degrees, to the elevation of the Truckee area where there are lows in the upper 30's.  Packing for both but having to pack as light as possible, lesson learned last time.

Anyway, if anyone has any advice or wants to share their own journey having to do with nature please respond.  All for city traveling as well.  Different travels.  I enjoy the best of both worlds but at this time, it is almost all nature for a very long time to me.

Hey Barnaby.

I did a 400+ mile hike last year, it was great. NY/CT Border to Canada.

How heavy is your pack? How much food do you plan on carrying? Its going to be important to know how to space out your resupplies, unless youre carrying everything that you need. It might get heavy if you plan on carrying 24 days worth of food!

What trail did you use?  Was it multiple ones?  And after my last experience overpacking and lasted a week, I know, idiotic but book knowledge and research only gets one so far.  Experience, whole different matter.  Going to send you a P.M.  Answer if you choose to.

There are places I can hike down and resupply, socialize and have some fun and clean and wash the clothes.  They don't allow fires, if you have seen the news on California fires where even a veteran firefighter said, "I have never seen anything like this",  and the smoke even where I live in Utah from it and here, am hoping I get through and they don't close it off.  But they have a website for the PCT so I will know.  Going even if they do.

Anyway, would be interested in your trip and how you went about it.  All I know is the lighter the better and knowing where the water sources are.  And not to pick out 12 books and pack them with a massive journal.  Looking back on it, I laugh.  This time will be different, wisdom gained.

Trail etiquette is special.  In my limmited experience thieves don't travel to almost 10,000 elevation and everyone wants to help each other in their journey.  What I love about it.  And the senses become so acute.

Anyway if you want to give me info thorugh this thread or on a P.M. I would be interested in the details of your journey in the American East.  And any thoughts of the A.T. if you are familier with it.  Thinking of doing it next year.  Not the whole thing of course but not a "tennis shoe" hiker as the saying goes.

There is a lot to say! I will reply to your PM but I think some information I have to offer could be useful to others, so Ill put the bulk here.

The trick is to keep your pack weight at 30 pounds, total. That is including food for about 5 days + 1 meal. This can vary in different areas. Some places you go, you'll want to carry 3L of water, and others with more water sources, 1 should suffice.

Do you have a "smart" phone? I used Guthook app for the Appalachian and Long trails, and it proved extremely useful. It tells you where all the water sources are, how far apart, where the shelters are, spur trails, resupply, etc. It works on airplane mode and I believe there is one for the PCT.

Hitching into towns can be useful just be weary of laws. Some towns are more friendly about it than others.

As for trail etiquette - The biggest "rule" should be to leave no trace. No tents set up in shelters, moving aside for those coming up hill if you're going down hill, etc. You can sort of learn as you go but it's helpful to know ahead of time.

About thievery - dude it happens. I've seen packs get stolen in the middle of nowhere Maine. Most trail towns are full of trail angels and other helpful people, and you'll see packs sitting in front of stores unattended, but still be weary. Even at camp sites, people can be shady. Id say overall, the people are great, and you generally wont have to worry too much. I still am cautious though.

As for fires - After hiking for 12 hours, people generally don't bother with fires. It can be tiring to find wood when you're already exhausted. So the fact that they are not allowed shouldn't phase you.

I think with the amount of time you will be on trail, you can cover 300 miles, give or take.

Will you be traveling solo?

Good luck OP

Edit:  Are you planning to have anyone send you any pre-packed care packages along the way?  Those would be nice treats to look forward to as you carry on with your journey.

I get it.  But no. Used almost three weeks to prepare.  Will bring some canned food and some cliff bars hike down into a town to resupply.  Last time I just had precooked in a bag of brown rice and quinoa with garlic.  Holy shit.  I get why the Aztecs used it.

Will pack it if they still have it stocked.  If not fuck it.  I get why everyone in the know invest in water.  Nothing lives without it.

Save weight by getting packages of Nors Pasta sides or something similar. If you have a camp stove, they take just 10 min. Bring to a boil then keep the lid on for a while and turn off the heat so you dont waste fuel.

OK Gaia. Seriously though, you seem like you would be a good an ally on the trail or off it, god forbid.  But yeah, not packing my gas and my thing that cooks on top on top of it.  Two years ago tried it, and it about exploded, lol.  I don't know if it was the company and it's fault, or just not knowing how to use it whatever.

All I care about is water resources.  I don't need to make into a death march but learned last time that was the only thing that matters.  Have gone a week without food and was fine.  Water is life.  It creates it.  The most precious resource on earth.

Time to go ride some roller coasters and rides and celebrate my life.  24 days in the wilderness.  How much I changed after just one week last time because I overpacked.  But have a train to catch on the 31'st, life is interesting isn't it?

I used to hate my birthdays with fake and phoney family shit.  Not it is like, holy shit, I made it to this one!  Not taking stupid risks, just strange to have a deadline but it saved me 30 bucks.  Plus I think at a deeper level it gives me a destination to use my will towards when things get rough and they will.  But also most of it will be fun and I look forward to it.

God.  What a journey.  If you can freeze your ass off in the 30's in August your idea doesn't sound good.  Smoke, fire, endless dead trees, a black bear that paid me a visit, endless bug bites, and lack of water resources.

I will post a part of what I took on it from my digital camera.  Gaining weight and strenght back now and these bites are finally healing.

Met some amazing people.  One sees it on t.v. with the wildfires then one goes into the heart of where it went to and it's one big massive campfire in cities and in nature with very little water resources and so much shit to breathe in.

We are all in for a big treat by mother earth in the times to come and she will be fine.  We are the ones fucking each other over.  Just a two year difference from the last time and how it is now.  You millenials are fucked, sorry.  Not much I can do on that one.  Just support the Koch brothers, lol and Trump.

Senses get reeled but shortly on psychedelics and is shallow.  I get why the Beatles gave it up.  It doesn't last and is forgotten quickly.  Though some lessons stick but is fleetling.  More that one becomes aware of ones body and riches are trivial.  You can't spend a twenty on a mountain top for water when one is gagging on the air.  Nature doens't accept money or credit cards.  It is man made, lol.

Fuck it, most was hellish but I think it is only going to get worse in time.  The old timers know this and share wisdom.  People actually worth learning from than pampered and wastes of life that really mean nothing in the larger scheme of things and just want all the comforts that money can provide.  Fuck them.

But it will be the poor that suffer the worst first, of course like now and for awhile for anyone that pays attention to the world.  But it will catch up to everyone.  Fuck it.  I survived a bear a foot away from me and am alive and lack of water.  Is amusing, the riches and possesions that people value that mean nothing, most of it.:chesire:

You got some pics to share?  Which trail did you follow?  How many miles?  What was some of the gear you had with you?  Did you travel solo?

So many questions.

I stumbled onto a black bear and it's cub in the smoky mountains a few months ago backpacking with my brother.  The encounter only last a few seconds before it ran deeper into the woods with it's cub but it was so intense.

Was it the A.T.?  I made took some pictures and a few videos from my camera.  Not of the bear.  I was asleep and the last thing I would want to do is make a nature doc or picture of the it after that many miles of hiking.

Got some great stuff though.  I will post some of it tomorrow. Healing and trying my best to gain weight.  It feels like my stomach has been stapled and it I am feeling to just heal for a week.  Feel all muscle and bone.

Strange, but amazing.  I don't care if people see my face.  Freedom in America is alive and well!  Lol, seriously though, I don't care.  See what it looks like in the heart of it as the world burns and floods.
