Spore Prints
    #842996 - 08/25/02 07:36 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

I have a simple statement to make that I thought everyone new allready.
When making prints don`t use cardboard or paper that is absorbent because inevitably the spores are going to become unuseable when absorbed into the material.
I`m saying this because I recieved a print from someone on the shroomery that was small but totally unuseable.
So try using tinfoil or a similar glossy material so the spores stick but don`t absorb into the material.

Absorb into the material? I've gotten quite a few paper prints and never had this problem. I have seen prints on paper that were damaged somewhat in the mail -- the print appeared to be smudged and the spores were "rubbed" into the paper through friction -- but they still were fine.

How was the print unusable?

I`ve never personally had this problem with prints I`ve made but this was a print recieved from someone so I`m only guessing it was the paper used.
Because the print was useless, I wet the card and tried to scrape whatever was useable into the shot-glass.
So I`m innoculating some birdseed and hoping something grows, there was no noticeable spore in the syringe.
All the spores seemed to have gotten absorbed into the paper.

If you wet the card, the spores most likely will not drop into the solution. Did you scrape paper and all into the shot glass?

I scraped paper and all into the shot glass.
When you hold the syringe to the light you can see loads of paper fragments
so I`m guessing some spores will be in the syringe.
SO I`ll innoculate with extra CCs of solution and wait and see.
The thing is though the print was soooo tiny as well.
I just don`t understand why someone would make a tiny print firstly and then secondly not try to see if the print will absorb into the paper.

When I print caps I choose the largest and most impressive shrooms, that way my prints are dark and big.

If the print wasn't contaminated and you made the syringe aseptically, I bet you'll be surprised!

Only time will tell mickey rourke.
The only thing I`m worried about that is by using more solution I might push the moisture content in the jar up making it soggy.
But birdseed is cheap and prints are readily available so I aint got jack to loose
But just like I`ve been told soo many times, any spore you can see is most likely a group of a couple hundred or thousand spores.
So I`ll have a jar of Hawaiin mycelium soon
Time is my friend.

how much solution were you planning on using per jar? and how does this affect mycellium growth?

I personally would like to know your definition of "unusable."

I print on manila folder stock that I cut to shape for each cap. I have had no problems with spores easily scraping into the shot glass.

You sure you actually got spores?

Peace,

Bop

ok let me explain this once again.
I would think by my previous explanation unusable would be easy to understand.
The print had soaked or absorbed into the paper.
There wasn`t a single spore able to be scraped off.
I had to scrape the fibres of paper into the shot glass.
Once I had sucked up the contents of the shot glass into the syringe there was only paper fibres in the syringe.
So fine I innoculated 2 jars with 5cc per jar just to be safe.

Now the question remains, was the print actually unusable??? we'll have to see in the next 2 days now won`t we.

And Boppity no disrespect but do you really think I don`t know what a spore print looks like????
When I print caps I choose the best specimens and print them, my prints are always big black prints, when it comes time to make a syringe there`s never a problem with trying to scrape spores off.
So when I get a tiny light print originally labeled as large dark hawaiin print I get annoyed.
Then trying to use it and not even being able to scrape spores off I get peeved.

So this is reality and I was merely trying to bring it to the communities attention.
Just be wary of what you print on, that`s all I was trying to say.

i have had the same problem, what i do is fill a syringe with sterile water, let cool, inject through the bag, shake around untill most of the spores are suspended, then suck the water back into the syringe.

Well Mickey I guess the proof is in the poodin.
The jars have started growing and seem to be doing just fine.
Proof that clear isn`t bad when dealing with syringes.

Hey I'm new here. I haven't had a problem making spore prints up until now. My cakes started producing the mushrooms and I cut the cap off of some of them to produce spore prints on foil but there were no spores in the gills. First time this has happened. Do you know what the cause of this would be?

Did you cover them with a cup or jar and let sit 24-36h?
