It was a petty statement that cost his employers hundreds of millions of dollars. Making a political statement that they do not wish to be associated with. Forcing a company to oblige to the political views of the people that they pay is stupid. Disagree with the decision to not let them kneel, fine. But don't act like this is some human rights violation, when it is an extremely minor thing to ask of the players considering, again, it cost the NFL hundreds of millions of dollars. And for what? So some rebellious feeling employees that they pay 6-7 figure salaries get to make a vague, uwwaranted political statement using THEIR platform under THEIR logo? It is ridiculous to think that the NFL should be required to let players kneel and watch their ratings tank under a government enforced guise of political tolerance. It's their company, their platform, their money.

So where's the line? When is it not okay for a company to be able to force a person to say something or take part in some expression, simply because that person is an employee? Or as an employee, does a company have complete control over what you do or don't say or which acts of expression you choose to participate in, and also the ability to fire you if you don't?

companies fire people all the time for shit like that little kid. welcome to the real world where nobody gives a shit about ur feelings or whatever. try working at an actual important job and start running ur mouth off on social media. look what they did to Roseanne ffs.

I thought Nike was a corporation that has systematically oppressed the disenfranchised for decades. Or is this like another Nike?

Yes, the Kaepernick supporters are celebrating the same Nike that uses child and slave labor in third world nations to enhance shareholder value.

It's extremely laughable.

Kaepernick was better off using his book deal to cry. Now he is a giant hypocrite.

But he found his $$$$$$. Good for him.

i'll have to look into that case.  But if "actions have [legal] consequences" then one can't really (accurately) call it a freedom.

There's a difference between an employee choosing to say something on their own, like Roseanne choosing to chase the ambien walrus and then say stupid shit on twitter, and a company being able to force someone to take part in an expression, whether it be religious, political, etc. If I was a card carrying NRA member, should my company be able to fire me for refusing to take part in an anti-gun rally, assuming that organizing and participating in anti-gun rallies wasn't central to the mission of the company or part of my job description?

There's a pretty firm legal basis for people like Roseanne getting fired for saying racist/anti-Semitic shit, whether in their free time or on company time, since the companies are legally bound to provide a workplace environment free of discrimination based on religion, race, or sex, and allowing an employee to remain who spouts off things that are discriminatory against those protected categories leaves them liable. I don't see how that translates into refusing to take part in a prayer or the pledge of allegiance being fireable offenses. Unless taking part in certain political or religious expression is a core component of my job description, a company shouldn't be able to fire me for refusing to partake in it with them.

All hail our corporate overlords for making the decision to throw millions at players for their political spiciness. Let's all buy Nike shoes to stick it to the establishment.
