Wondering if anyone here has tried (or read about) making any kind of extract or tea from cordyceps (or other) mycilium. I have a good culture, and am interested in trying it out, but am not set up to try to fruit from worm heads or whatnot.
have heard of making tea by boiling colinized grain, and i know the big mycomedicinal growers use some kind of shaking/spinning device to seperate mych from grain. but am not sure of specifics at all.

I don't know exactly how Cordyceps myc is commercially grown but I assume that it's easier to grow it in liquid form then on grain.

I believe that in china they do use some big liquid fermentation vat type setups.
But the big u.s producers grow on grain. if you look at the label of a bottle of extract it will usually say, contains x amount of grain, or something like that.
i personally would be a lot more confident taking an extract from grain, due to the difficulty spotting contams in liquid.

I'd love to try to grow it on insects like Suntzu did - that must be fun.
I'm just afraid that my girlfriend will kick me out of house.

i actualy have a friend who keeps pet wealworms.
i think i am going to get him some luna moth larva and start experimenting with those.
do you know if anyone on these boards has had any success with actualy getting fruitbodys?
i havent been able to find much info on anybody doing it on any kind of small scale.
but it seems like a fun thing to play with.

If you get a chance, try some human hair. It's the closest thing we have to an exoskeleton, and it'd be a a lot easier than the bugs to work with.

i don't think the exoskeleton is really what the fungus is after, more the nutricious goo in the middle.
the usually host insect, Hepialus armoricanus don't really look like they have much of an exoskeleton, all squishy.

While i am on the subject of bugs, anyone know a good place to buy specimens,
am looking in particular, for that little guy, but perhaps another hepialus would do.
have also heard silkworms and luna moth larvea are similar.
.
i think what makes these guys such good hosts, (aside from whatever their chemical composition is) is that they burrow down just below the surface when things get cold, at about the same temps as cordys like to infect and fruit.
so my thought is to basically make a casing of some loose non nutriative material on top of a thing layer of cordy infected grain, let some of these guys hang out in it,try to refrigerate and humidify as best i can and hope the will burrow and infect on their own.
has anyone else tried anything similar? saw one interesting experiment with dead, sterilized meal worms, but i don't think anything with living insects.

also i found somewhat of an answer to my original question if anyone is interested.
from mycoculture.org (a pretty good group for edible & medicinals btw)
"I use about 30-40g (fresh weight) of myceliated rye per liter of tea. I also
put in 7-15g of dried Reishi (Gandoderma) for it's anti-inflamitory effect.
I grate fresh ginger in at the end of a 5 min. boil and steep 30 min. The
ginger is to counter the taste of the reishi! I drink 1/2 liter a day for
2-3 days and give myself a day off from the tea.
The Yaks life span? No idea."
