Need Identification w/ pic
    #2543191 - 04/09/04 11:57 AM (20 years, 11 days ago)

Ok I found these, they were growing out here in Brookfield, WIsconsin. They were in a little forrest, and they have brownish/reddish caps, yellow gills, orange stems, and slightly sticky caps after I picked them. I took pictures of the best-looking ones. I looked at some other sites, and from what I can tell, it's some kind of edible one, but I need you guys to tell me.

Perhaps some sort of clitocybe, I really don't know. But it would help if you madde a sporeprint and better photos would be cool too.

You also didn't mention what they were growing from. It's very important whether they were growing from wood or on the ground.

Given the time of year, I'll guess they were growing from wood. They look and sound like Flammulina velutipes (Enokitake). If so, they should have been growing in a cluster, with the bases of the stems attached to each other. Be sure to verify the spore print color, and, for identification, do the spore print on white paper. There are some similar very poisonous species, and spore print color is the easiest way to eliminate them.

Happy mushrooming!

In the ground, but I've seen them on the stumps/sides of trees, there are a lot out here. They grow in huge clusters with their stems attached. The spore print I took a while ago was white (i think). Too late to do it over again, I threw these out a while ago, because they were rotting. I just wondered, since I'll probly find more, what species they were. Thanks.

I went outide today and took a pic of the same kind of shrooms I found in their natural habitat. The stems were deep in the ground.

Those are *not* Enokitake.

Get a spore print and let us know what color it is. For ID purposes, make the spore print on whtie paper.

Happy mushrooming!
