Thai red vein doing well... it was a tiny seedling a few inches tall when I received it nine months ago, now it's about a metre or so... the largest leaves are about a foot long (or were, I've just picked a couple and am enjoying their effects right now  )

(It is also enjoying the company of various green malay kratoms that are about 4-5 months old, two types of Catha edulis and some Acacia acuminatas...)

Some of my favorite ethnos .All of your plants are lovely. Just a beautiful group of plants :greenthumb:

And that Thai red certainly has a beautiful red hue to it's foliage.

I was talking with a kratom farmer/seller from Indonesia today and he told me something very interesting about horned leaves.
He said that horns depend on the soil's mineral content, so that if the soil is high in minerals the plant will grow horns.
I think that's not the only factor but it might definitely play a role, will be interesting to experiment.

I made sure he meant minerals by "mine" later in the convo

Also, I thought most if not all of the indo kratom was wild harvested, I was wrong. Guess that should put an end to the "seedgrown isn't potent" rumours

Sorry for the double post but both of those things are extremely interesting. I'm drooling over the plantation pic.

The trees are loving this late summer week long rainy spell. Won't be to too long until northern start blowing in and drop the humidity. My favorite time of year is coming up. I'm about to get some cuttings from each species to root them and keep them in small pots so I can bring them inside on the few cold nights we have in January and February. insurance incase the big ones die but if they didn't die last year from a night of snow AND 2 days of freezing rain then I think they are fairly safe.

First night in the sgfc.

Hopefully they will acclimatize without much fuss.

Lost Two cuttings.
Took cuttings off them and now attempting to root those.

Only one cutting doesn't has roots visible.

The rest are kicking ass and taking names!

Speaking of spreading the love!

How would I ship a rooted cutting?

I've had cacti shipped to me so I've seen how that's handled.
And the un-rooted cuttings I've seen.

But never a rooted plant.

I acclimate clones to outside real world conditions, let them start growing, then I ship bare root.

Gently uproot plant, gently wash away excess soil (I sometimes leave a little), wrap roots and stem in wet paper towels, gently secure paper with cling wrap, parafilm, rubberband, sting, etc. Place in plastic bag that has a few ml of water, seal it. And male sure the box has enough padding that the plant does not move even if you were to shake the box. Plants rattling around in boxes will result in damaged plants.

I've shipped in pots before and I've received many plants in pots. Generally globular cacti are easy to ship in a pot you wrap them like a mummy in soft toilet paper and place in a bed of paper or peanuts.

Leafy plants are generally secured in the pot with rubber bands or tape then placed in a bed of shredded paper or packaging peanuts to where they are supported and cushioned but not crushed or readily rattle around.

Its not that hard. In moistened spaghnum moss wrap the roots. Then place in a ziploc baggie and wrap the top with tape. Then place a baggie on the top. Learned that from kada kuda and i sent him like 30 or so rooted cuttings to taiwan. Ive also sent rooted krwtom cuttings to parts of europe as well.

I like sending potted plants this way domestically. Super easy and drinking some coke to get the 2 liter is way tasty.

2 litres of coke would make me ill.

It's Spring here. My kratom will come out of dormancy in the next 6-8 weeks.

Then it's cloning time.

This is shortly after transplanting and putting under a better grow light.

This is yesterday...

My plant had a good summer

When growing this plant indoors, does it have to be in a tent or need a humidifier for humidity?

Could I grow it alongside ferns, anthuriums, and Psychotria carthagenensis plants in a south facing window?

Beautiful! So I take it Kratom is indeed self-pollinating? Never could find a definitive answer to this

What I mean by that is that if you only have one single flowering tree will it still produce seeds?

The term for that is "self-fertile".
From what I've heard is that it is indeed self fertile.

Actually the word I was looking for is self-compatible.
Searching for "self-fertile" on google pulls up the wikipedia page for self-pollination, which is indeed a different mechanism (ie the lack of need for outside pollinators, vs the need for genetically different pollen for self-incompatible plants)
