jar bottoms (still) won't colonize
    #2543620 - 04/09/04 03:22 PM (13 years, 20 days ago)

My foaf has some jars of parakeet seed colonizing - parakeet seed is almost entirely white millet. Anyway the bottoms of these jars just refuse to colonize. He's shaken them, inverted them, and everything else he can think of, and in over a week there's been no visible progress down there. He thinks that the millet on the bottoms may have gotten dried out.

Is that likely to be a problem? Is there any good way for him to introduce more water? Or, on the other hand, he's thinking of just using the grain as-is, by just throwing away the uncolonized stuff off the bottom.

thinking if you spawn or crumble the wbs that you'll be fine, it will probably use the nutes from the uncolonized part eventually. i say spawn it and case it.

I don't know if my experience will help or not. My rye flour jars didn't colonize all of the way on some of the sides, but I pulled them out anyway, scraped off the uncolonized areas, and then cased them in verm/coir. You can see my results so far in another post...don't listen to people if they tell you to chuck them. I was given that advice myself and you can see what I would have been missing out on. At least give it a try first before chucking em.
