I'm good, very fortunate in fact, and yes, my philosophical quest has been the main contributing factor towards my gratitude, contentedness, fulfillment and happiness. I have learned from the best minds, and one does not have to go to school to learn the same thing. Read and contemplate! [Lege et Ora!] Diplomas are for self-esteem and practical job-hunting, not enlightenment.

I am unhappy about aspects of my life and happy about others. I have many more things to be happy about than sad about. Assessing this I make the cognitive judgement that 'I am happy'.
How do you know whether you are happy or not? What if you feel 'OK'? Is that inherently good or bad? happy or sad?

Yes and no

Seems hard sometimes to balance positive and negative perfectly.

It's easy to look at life and imagine how it could be better.

It's hard to be grateful for all the gifts we have been given.

Acceptance seems an important aspect of happiness.

We are here experiencing what we are experiencing.

If I feel unhappy I then question, why? Should I feel this way?

Questions seem endless and unanswerable.

Seems all we can hope to do in the end is master our mind and see what happens from there. The mind seems to be our labyrinth.

Ever a struggle for control against our conditioning.

If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, accept it and move on.

It all begins with the mind.

What helps me sometimes is belief that we are here for a reason. We either chose or are here to learn. Acceptance of the circumstances and responsibility for controlling ones thoughts. If nothing more there are others here and our thoughts and actions impact their experience.

We hold others destinies in our decisions as much as we hold our own.

That is an unquestionable fact and it gives our life purpose.

What then is happiness?

Easing the suffering of others seems some sort of remedy for healing ones self, maybe some things are higher than happiness.

Maybe this, maybe that, where does that leave you?

Meditation seems to be what you are left with, as you are eventually left with no answers, and it's secrets are only revealed by direct experience, if they do exist...

Are you happy now :lol:

Emotions rise and fall as swiftly as the breeze

Sit back and watch them

:laugh:

haha.... nothing wrong with that.

so;

to answer these, I would express that these things are energies.

It's as un-normal to me to be moved by them as it is to be moved emotionally by the weather. . .

What I am saying is, I've always had a fairly high degree of equanimity;

But - the beginning point; these are all energies -- the energy of happiness, of peace, of love, of all the others. . . . So, if one is a bit detached from them -- for instance, if one overcomes them so that one is at peace in all circumstances -- i.e., not controlled or swayed by things, -- then one can begin to see how they are energy.

The deepest and purest love, for instance, is calm, cool, refreshing; and it is warm. . . It's there and one can feel it. . . it's worthwhile.

True happiness is along these lines; I give it that moniker TRUE because it's different from . . . . let's say, if some one gets pleasure from hurting others -- I wouldn't call that happiness.

Anyway -- so happiness is an energy; a very healthy and beneficial one;

The opposite is there, too -- this is like, dead zone -- touching it is like, you dip you arm into something which kills all the nerves...

etc.,

So, detachment and cultivating the states contributory to peace, love and joy and so forth...

They can get one there.

:heart:

Warning: Senior Moment (unaware I just re-responded to a 15 year old post - for the 2nd time)! :foreheadslap:  :banghead:  :shrug:

Dude, [are you even still out there?] how do you give a forum population kudos for being "much mroe educated/intelligent/wise etc than your average joe," and then ask people "please don't lie?' :lol: Wisdom does not exist outside of a personality matrix of virtue, integrity, and honor. Education and intelligence can obviously be used in the service of evil (just look at the Ayn Rand, Social Darwinist positions of Republicans, many of whose intellects are colored by philosophies of pathological selfishness and callousness)!

I'm sorry that you are not happy. I was unhappy for 2 decades! From the time I completed undergraduate studies in December 1975 until late in 1996, I had 2 lonely years living in my parents' house again while I hid from the world in a Christian seminary. Then I got into grad school in another state and was just as lonely but far from the familiar. That is why I became quickly engaged to a woman who was cold and as it turned out mentally ill and malevolent. That bad relationship and marriage lasted 13 long years (I had real grounds to leave after the 2nd, but by the 3rd year I should have left when she had a tubal ligation without discussion, I but was too cowardly admit defeat and bail). Biggest 2 mistakes of my entire life: personally and professionally (moving to Florida).

After leaving my marriage my only sibling rejected me when I reached out for emotional support for the first and only time of my life. ¡Adios asshole! One year after divorcing I needed cataract surgery. Four years after divorcing I came down with malignant melanoma, and my mother died. BUT, I also met my current wife of 22 years, and I bought my first house. I kept my position in the 4th largest school system in the US for 27 years til it ran out and I had to retire 3 years early. Happiness commenced just as I survived the cancer and buried my mother at age 43!

I am now 65 and the last 22 years, despite my beloved Dachshund Ben's death, my father's death, and some non-lethal health problems, have been the happiest years of my post-childhood, post-undergraduate life. I've been retired since 2013 and have a pension. Next year will be full Social Security benefits. I hope to live an unusually long life. My father smoked 2-3 packs of ciggies a day for 50 years, was fat and flabby and never exercised and he still lived to 86 but his uncle, my great uncle lived to 106. Hell, I have to make up for lost time being unhappy.

What do YOU have to do to increase your happiness quotient? Happiness is juxtaposed with unhappiness, pleasure with pain, loss with gain. As the Moody Blues put it, life is A Question of Balance. (I hope in the last 15 years you found your happiness :heart: ).

Thanks Enkidu, but it would seem that I had a senior moment the last time I responded to this 15 year old post 8 years ago! :eek: :wtf: At least I'm bound to remember it the next time someone resurrects it. I'd delete it, but (1) you responded to it and (2) it took some thinking, so there it is. :shrug:

Can't say I'm not happy but I'm content, I constantly am looking for things to learn and distract myself with.
