My rearview mirror fell down....
    #2543115 - 04/09/04 11:31 AM (19 years, 11 months ago)

So I went to the store and bought the glue, followed the directions and glued the bracket back on. Unfortunatly, being the fucking moron that I am I glued it on facing the wrong way......and now it's stuck. I'm so pissed off at myself, I can't believe I did something so stupid. Any suggestions?

I cracked my windshield trying to get the old bracket off. Two days later my truck was baking in the summer heat and the bracket fell off when I was working in the fields. Too bad there was a nice big chunk of wy windshield attached to it.

It's glued on there so well.....I don't know how to break it off. The only thing I can think is to use a hammer and screwdriver/chisel type action, but I'm scared of breaking my windshield.

get some Goo-B-Gone and soak that shit as good as you can
rubbing alchole, keroseen, or paint thinner.
anything like that should work but Goo-B-Gone works well
and if you try to pry it off use a big razor blade and slide it between the bracket and the windshield
DO NOT force it you will break the windshield

Does that mean that the objects in the mirror are no longer "closer than they appear?"

yeah but super glue works well with that hsit when you have it on the right way, mine fell off like 6 months ago, I superglued it and I haven't had a problem since.

:lol:You wouldn't believe how often people do that exact thing!  If you don't take a second to noodle it through then it doesn't seem right to glue it on the other way.  But as soon as its on there you realise what you've done.

Unfortunately I've never found a really good way to get those off and gaurantee you wont crack the windshield.  What I have done for people in the past is to just get a new piece (that glues to the windshield) and glue it on the proper way right above the other one.

Right above as in on the glass, or on top of the other metal piece? Would metal to metal cause a problem you think? And Eric, that was the first thing I tried....it was horribly unsuccessful.

the goal is to scrape all the glue off of your windshield. the metal knob will come off once you scrape enough of the glue off.

i don't know how your windshield is shaped, but scraping from side to side will work better if your windshield is rounded.

The glue is underneath the metal piece dude, I can't get to it with a razorblade.

This is why you use Gorilla Glue for all your heavy and medium duty projects. It is THE most powerful glue on earth...and unlike regular ol "super/krazy glue", it has a 15 minute-window of working time, which in your case would've came quite in handy.

I used this stuff on my steel-toe boots, since my steel toe cap fell off, and glued it back; and boy does that stuff live up to it's reputation. It is not a joke.

Gorilla Glue.

On the glass. Just above it so you can put the mirror back on the new piece. But you will always see the old piece on the window below the spot where the mirror is now mounted.

The stuff I used takes 30 minutes to set. The problem was I'm a moron, and didn't realize it was on wrong until after it had set and couldn't get the mirror to slide on.
