Diebold voting machine hacking
    #2543087 - 04/09/04 01:14 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Anybody see the episode of The Daily Show the other day where they showed a clip from some guy who was able to hack into the Diebold voting machine, change votes and erase his trail all in under 5 minutes???

That's insane. How are we going to be sure that the votes are legit?

That's the beauty of it...

Btw, how can you be sure that votes totals arrived at without electronic voting are legit?

Who said anyone wanted the public to have a legitimate say in their government?

Whats insane is how they were able to get voting machines in place that dont print a paper copy so that their can be a re-count.

Whoever made the decision to let these machines be in use without a paper trail should be shot. I dont know if the public could even demand such a thing? We should though.

Electronic Voting Advocate Dies in Crash

"Athan Gibbs, designer and promoter of the excellent TruVote machine, died after losing control of his car.

It's hard to think of anything that is more important right now than to make sure the upcoming U.S. elections are not tampered with. And one has got to wonder why there has been any resistance at all to there being a paper trail (not an "audit trail") of the votes on electronic voting machines. As Gibbs said,

I've been an accountant, an auditor, for more than 30 years. Electronic voting machines that don't supply a paper trail go against every principle of accounting and auditing that's being taught in American business schools.

Obviously correct. The very idea that the levers of democracy should be in the hands of for-profit institutions is already deeply problematic. But infinitely more worrisome is that the electronic voting companies getting the HAVA contracts are all incestuously connected and were funded by the extreme conservative Christian right.

Let us all continue to take action today, in memory of Athan Gibbs, to prevent further thefts of our elections."

The proof is in the pudding.

But not when they start at the rear of your pants and follow you out of a public restroom.

I think it's something like: "Trust us. We're your government. We know what's best for you."

I find it quite telling how the IRS can keep records on virtually any citizen's income to make sure every cent has been paid to the Federal goverment for a decade or more, but yet vote counts/counting/recording is such an insecure and easily manipulated system where records are easily lost or not created in the first place. This speaks volumes about the nature of our government.
