New phat ass hepa filter!
    #25426546 - 08/31/18 05:53 PM (2 years, 8 months ago)

New filter today. Still need to double check blower size with someone who knows the math. It's a 4" thick 22" x 41" pleated filter. The specs on it read:

Rated Performance 99.99995% @ MPPS
Pressure drop .401

Other info listed: Airflow 550 cfm Class F

I figure it was 7 square feet total area and needing 100 cfm that would need 700 cfm from a fan after pressure drop.

I kinda got a bit confused and lost...the fan I got has max of 780 cfm @ 0.100" SP and 690 cfm @ .300"

Now that the filter arrived and has a test rating of 550 cfm at .401 inches W.G. I don't know if this blower is enough?

Help is much appreciated!

I'm confused here....if this thing has an initial pressure drop of .401 " from the start I don't think the 797 cfm blower is going to cut it...

bumpity bump! Wanting to start the build this weekend but not building it if the fan is not the correct size.

Bueller? Bueller?

Hope everyone had a nice long weekend but can I get some help with this math please?

There's loads of guides.
I wouldn't use that filter. It might not even produce laminar flow. Sure it's a hepa but is it a laminar flow hepa?

Looks like a great deal!  But will it achieve laminar flow? the resistance is low.4 if I remember correct the resistance near 1” on the laminar flow filters helps build even presssure in the plenum to achieve laminar flow..
I would think low resistance on the filter would make the air go through easily not creating proper flow..    but nothing is perfect ,,  I use a cheap inline for my 12x24 that should not work according to specs of blower/filter but works fine with even flow..

I am building a new hood  again and  I would be tempted to buy your link but probably just wait for a laminar flow filter pops up on eBay for good deal...    I bought mine from fungi, com 7 years ago there prices are wack now so I’m just waiting..

good luck on your build and keep us posted...    oh if you buy a inline fan keep it outside the box don’t build it inside.. I started mine outside then re built in closed to be more compact.  but it messes with the flow I have noticed. At least with my lighter test.

Actually now after looking at this one I think I am wrong, I  think  your filter would be perfect it has the same resistance as the laminar one I linked..  these filters are so confusing with only a old Stamets book to go by..  for builds

I use the internet that’s why I’m here.
Just cause a flowhood tek is on shroomery doesn’t make it have correct laminar flow..

I used them guides when I built my first one and about 6 years ago I used damions build it works good just building  a new one cause my filter is old..  and switching my inline to my grow ten.

I think all them guides are based off Stamets specs in his book like fungifin.. ...  the question is what determines even flow out of the hood,,  The pressure built up or what? , since with low resistance there would be hardly any pressure.... I mean if there is hardly any resistance then fan performance at static pressure reallly doesn’t mean much.  You can have to filters with same spec, and one is labeled laminar flow filter. . What is different?

I have yet to find one designed for laminar flow on eBay. I just picked up a 24x24x11.5 nuclear grade that met the filtration specs. It has like 1 inch resistance, but I am sure it doesn't achieve laminar flow, and I still have a VERY VERY high success rate with this thing. I am not sure laminar flow is so important so long as you don't work near the edge of the filter. Which I wouldn't even do with one that is rated for laminar flow.  Eventually I will build a Plexiglas box around the front to work in, but this works damn good so far, and I have used this for a year now.

The nuclear grade ones do produce laminar flow. Lower resistance ones sometimes are just for scrubbing air tho. You ca. Always test it out with an incense stick

I also got a cheap anemometer, but it shows uneven flow across the front. I just work right in front of the filter and keep agar work in the middle. I have ran close to 1000 plates since spring and have had very little random mold, like less than a handful of plates. At $150 shipped it was a good option, I just hate how deep the hood had to be built.

type in laminar flow filter on  Ebay 3 pop up up on my computer. But cheapest is like 350$ for a 24x48. Filter2b use to sell the laminar filters for 99$ for the 12x24” but I recently emailed them and min order now is 3.  That’s weird you wouldn’t get even flow on yours though

I didn't get HUGE variance across the surface, but there was variance. I did also buy the cheapest anemometer they had on eBay so who knows how accurate it was.

anemometers are least accurate at the bottom of their range and most of them have minimum rates higher than the 100fpm flow which is jist barely over 1mph. Most anemometers cant register 1mph wind.
