Transforming a cheap electric pressure washer into a high pressure fogger
    #25419245 - 08/28/18 01:03 PM (5 years, 7 months ago)

Hi everyone,

I am looking around for options to humidify my grow room, and now I realize the best systems are the ones that use high pressure water (around 1000 psi) so that the droplet size coming out of the nozzle is very small (around 5 microns), which allows you to humidify the air without getting all the floor, blocks ans fruits wet. Unfortunately those systems are usually quite expensive (aeromist has a system for around 900 bucks). So I was searching for other options (i dont need a high flow system), and I discovered that those electric pressure washer used to clear cars, sidewalks, gates etc operate at a very high pressure (around 1500 psi) and are very cheap (around 60 bucks). I am talking about a pump such as the one in the link bellow.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BGTLT9K/ref=s9_acsd_top_hd_bw_b2Jp2_c_x_5_w?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-4&pf_rd_r=BJT8QCBVBGMX6EEMSB93&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=3261fe80-f805-520d-a4b9-a524364e36a1&pf_rd_i=552856

So I was wondering if anyone ever thought about plugging a high pressure hose with some high pressure mist nozzles to one of those electric washer to see how fine of a mist one would get, how about that? Anyone ever tried?

Why in the world would you even need humidification like that for growing psychedelic shrooms. Are you trying to grow a few pounds of them a week or something?

Yes, I've tried it and it works. Bot you'd need a greenhouse sized grow to make it worthwhile.

Yes i have a 7 by 18 feet greenhouse. I am actually growing gourmet mushrooms, but humidification is a issue commom to both, right? What kind of nozzles and hose did you use?

This thread was moved from Mushroom Cultivation.

Reason:
here's the edibles section, growing pounds in a green house big enough to walk in is a whole different game than what the psychedelic crowd does.

I've seen others ask this question and the general consensus was that the motor in a pressure washer is not designed for that kind of use, and would most likely burn out pretty quickly. Personally I think it's worth trying since they're relatively cheap.

Hi guys, I am sorry if posting this in the general growing sections was inconvenient, its just that it has much more visibility than the gourmet section. I was really hoping to find someone that actually put this project to work.

This is the general growing section for edibles. The other one was for psychedelics and there's a slim chance someone in there has also made a large walk in Greenhouse for edibles using a high pressure mist setup. In this section the chances are far higher.

Look for fogger nozzles or high pressure misting nozzles. There are loads on Amazon. That's where I bought mine.

I predict the pump will burn out in a heartbeat as it is designed to put out 1gpm or more and say 10 or 20 nozzles wold be less than half or a quarter of that.  In my mind it would double or triple internal pressure and blow a hose or gasket pretty quickly

a brand new electric pressure fogger cost about 250. They are great for cleaning rooms. Fill it with bleach water, put on a chemical mask, and start spraying. They do a really good job and last a long time if you rinse them with soapy water after every use. Bleach is a visious chemical that can eat through most any metal if it is given enough time.
Good luck with the experiment.

I just built one and posted today. It works great but you have to run your water back to the inlet side before the filter. I have a ball valve to allow water to flow and keep the washer from turning on an off repeatedly. Hit me up I will walk you through it but you are looking at at least $250 to do this. Here is a link to my system running in a small room. if you run enough nozzles you may not need the ball valve or to run it back to the inlet. I would guess 20 nozzles. ebay has a great deal on nozzles right now mistworks 10 .1mm for $20

$200 for all the parts below be aware you will need connections to connect to your house pipes and a filter.

*****I have revised some off the parts anything that has been revise I will put this at the beginning (*****) to make it easier to find. This is a work in progress guys.*****

Anyone trying this or planning to try this in the future BUY THESE NOW This is an awesome deal and the people are great. These usually cost $6 to $7 each and they work better than any other nozzles I have tried they are 10 nozzles for $20 GET THEM WHILE YOU CAN THIS WONT LAST LONG!!...

Mist Nozzles .10mm/.004", nickle coat, ceramic tip, anti-drip cleanable 10 pack

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mist-Nozzles-10mm-004-nickle-coat-ceramic-tip-anti-drip-cleanable-10-pack/132020912341?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I had a hard time finding the parts also. Remember depending on what washer you get. you need to be able to connect 3/8 high pressure mist hose to it. I bought this It might be a good idea to get amazon prime to save money on shipping B4 you buy...

Sun Joe SPX1000 1450 PSI 1.45 GPM 11.5-Amp Electric Pressure Washer $69.99

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BGTLT9K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and this to connect the hose. You can use this on any power washer with a M22 15MM connection...

HOSE ADAPTER FOR M22 15MM TO 3/8" $ 15.00

https://www.obsessedgarage.com/collections/pressure-washing/products/hose-adapter-for-m22-15mm-to-3-8

then you need 2 of these...

Brass 3/8 x 3/8 MNPT slip Lock Male Connector $9.99

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Brass-3-8-x-3-8-MNPT-slip-Lock-Male-Connector/332791870612?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

If using the above compression fittings you will need high pressure Ferrell's. Or you can just use 1/4 npt to 3/8 push lock. I used these Ferrell's. I got a bunch because I didn't know how many times I would have to change this but I am sure you can find these in smaller packs they take a long time for delivery...

LOT 10 Fit 3/8" Tube 304 Stainless Steel Compression Ferrule Insert Ring Fitting

https://www.ebay.com/itm/LOT-10-Fit-3-8-Tube-304-Stainless-Steel-Compression-Ferrule-Insert-Ring-Fitting/182626673879?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

(*****) and one of these...

The gauge I bought is this...

LIQUID FILLED PRESSURE GAUGE, 2.5" DIAL DISPLAY, STAINLESS STEEL CASE, BRASS INTERNALS, 1/4 MALE NPT LOWER MOUNT CONNECTION, DUAL SCALE PSI & BAR (0-2000) $14.45

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N1V3XUO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

depending on how many nozzles you plan on having buy these accordingly ...

High pressure Cooling 10* Brass Misting Nozzles + 5* Slip Lok Coupling Tees  $11.90 for 5 pcs

I bought the ones with the compression fittings and put 3/8 inserts from home depot in the hose to be safe. Inserts are not needed but they made me feel safe pic below.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Low-High-pressure-Cooling-10-Brass-Misting-Nozzles-5-Slip-Lok-Coupling-Tees/122571193686?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=422994416586&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

then you need the correct nozzles for the height of your ceiling. My ceiling is only 7 feet high so I ended up getting the .1mm I would guess anything blow 10 feet this is what you would want and this is a great deal right now only $20 for 10pcs...

Mist Nozzles .10mm/.004", nickle coat, ceramic tip, anti-drip cleanable 10 pack $20.00

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mist-Nozzles-10mm-004-nickle-coat-ceramic-tip-anti-drip-cleanable-10-pack/132020912341?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

then you need a ball valve to allow just enough water to flow to the inlet of your filter so the pressure washer does not cut off. I bought this...

3/8" Ball Valve Comet General AR Pressure Washer Ball Valve 7250 psi $23.50

https://www.ebay.com/itm/3-8-Ball-Valve-Comet-General-AR-Pressure-Washer-Ball-Valve-7250-psi/261120959550?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I also bought this just in case the ball valve breaks and lets the full pressure go through. I don't want 1500 psi going through my house water pipes and busting a pipe behind a wall...

VA CV-5000-08-08-5 - 1/2" Female Pipe High Pressure Check valve - 7 PSI Crackin $16.28

https://www.ebay.com/itm/VA-CV-5000-08-08-5-1-2-Female-Pipe-High-Pressure-Check-valve-7-PSI-Crackin/172512802356?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

and the last thing I think you will need besides all the pieces and adapters to connect your piping together is nylon hose it takes 2 weeks to get it from this link but it is way cheaper...

5/10/20/40M High/Low Pressure Nylon Pipe PE Tube Hose for Mist Cooling System $10.96 for 15 feet

https://www.ebay.com/itm/5-10-20-40M-High-Low-Pressure-Nylon-Pipe-PE-Tube-Hose-for-Mist-Cooling-System/253749308150?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=553024904510&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

The system above should be able to run 75 .1mm nozzles. I am running 5. if you do not use the .1mm nozzles use this chart to figure out how many you can run...

https://docs.zoho.com/sheet/published.do?rid=9jhz5292c7a782ae24b2999c040f2895fc8df

My house has 1/2 galvanized pipe that is why I used these sizes adjust yours accordingly

Don't forget a water filter either or your nozzles will be stopped up quickly

anyway IM me if you need more help.

If someone reads this in the future and the links don't work you can find the parts using the name above the links that are in red. Google is your
friend!!

The picture shows how everything should be ran. Once everything is together turn on the water in from house. Then turn off the cut off valve connected to the 3/8 nylon hose and misters. DO NOT START THE PRESSURE WASHER WITH THIS VALVE OPEN you could and probably will blow something. Then start the pressure washer. The pressure washer should turn on then turn off. Check for leaks. If you find leaks these should be fixed before continuing. Now slowly turn the cut off valve on that is connected to the 3/8 nylon hose and misters not the main water in from the house this valve should already be on. Turn the cut off valve Just until the pressure washer start to run and not cut off by its self. You should hear a load on the pressure washer. You want this valve to be closed as much as possible with out cutting off the pressure washer.

I dont understnd that part. Did you connect the high pressure water exit of the pressure washer to your house piping? Isnt it supposed to be connected to the nylon tubing?

I hope this picture helps. You have to connect the end that should be caped off on a regular mist system back to the inlet before the filter so you can let just enough water go through the ball valve to keep up pressure but not allow the pressure washer to turn off. the cut off is there so the pressure washer has water running constantly when on. if you don't have this your pressure washer will pulse on and off. Once you have it all hooked up turn off the ball valve turn on the pressure washer on it will go on and off because not enough water is being released. Then turn the ball valve until the pressure washer stays on you should hear a load on the pressure washer motor. !!DO NOT TURN ON THE PRESSURE WASHER WITH THE BALL VALVE OPEN!! something will blow. I would guess it would be your filter so avoid that. In the pic the cut off valve should have been labeled ball valve although they are the same thing. I just want to be clear.

No problem. This took me a lot of time and a lot of worry. I didn't know if this could be done and everyone said it would not work. But I love a challenge and saving people the trouble. I hope this helps people to accomplish a working fog system. If anyone else has questions please go to my post on the same subject I don't want to hijack this post. Here is a link to my post...

I have seen ppl run this type of feedback loop on carbonater pumps for lower pressure systems and it apparently works for some ppl maybe 6 months but those pumps are cheaper.

Yea I don't know how long the pressure washer will last but I bought the replacement plan for like $5. And it only runs in my case 10 to 15 seconds every 12 to 13 minuets. There is a good video on building your own on youtube but is like $400 to build it and you still need everything I bought, to complete the system. Here is the link if anyone is interested...

And here is where to get the pump there are different sizes they havve .13 .25 and .5 you need one of these that have the p at the end of the model # The p stands for pulse hose and you need one...

Hey man, just wondering, wouldnt it be easier and cheaper to just put enough nozzles so the washer doesnt pulse on/off during operation, and throwing that excess water out? Actually, you might not even need more noozles, just an adjustable ball valve directly to a drain. You would save a lot in parts and connections, wouldnt you?

And you'd have a huge mess unless you drained that excess outside.  Not to mention the pressure drop on your high side line.

That is what I was going to do at first, but the problem with that is the water never stops running. In other words the pressure washer does not stop water from flowing through it even if the washer is off. It is cheaper to buy the parts than to pay that water bill. Trust me this is the best solution. I spent way more than $250 trying things that didn't work. But only because I had no one to guide me that's why I put this out there. I would have liked to do it cheaper But I couldn't all ideas are welcome. I hope we find a better solution.

You can put it on a relay/timer/humidistat but putting 50 or so nozzles on would be quite at lot of fog even after half a minute.  I had 12 or so would fog out a 15x40ft room in abut a minute

Maybe you could put a solenoid valve right before the water inlet for the pressure washer? This way when everything was turned off there would be no water flow.

I did do that but it really served no purpose because you still need the ball valve to allow water through.

I am getting ready to go install a low water switch just in case I lose water. So I won't burn up the pressure washer. I am installing this from home depot...

40/60 Pressure Switch for Well Pumps

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-40-60-Pressure-Switch-for-Well-Pumps-EBPS4060/205617967

I did the math the pressure washer runs 15 seconds every 12 minuets which is 30 mins every 24 hours so by my calculations that's 186 hours a year or 8 24 hour days. Just in case you have a 20 hour day where you are from. LOL

That's less time than I thought. Someone check my math. And let me know if that is right.

To be more clear as to why the solenoid valve does not work is because the pressure washer needs to think water is being released from the hose or it will pulse on and off. You could do this if you put a drain nozzle on the hose before the misters and then run the drain nozzle to a sink or a condensate pump. But then you will lose pressure and the water that the drain nozzle squirts out. I do not have a drain or a sink right now and the price of the condensate pump was more than the ball valve and why wast the water?

I just finished hooking up the pressure gauge. This system is running at 1275 psi. So a lower psi pump should work also. I was questioning how much pressure I was getting having it hooked up like this. Assuming that the pressure washer  puts out 1450 psi as is stated on the washer then I am loosing 175 psi. 1275 psi is well above what is needed for the misters to perform.

Low side psi before the filter pic pressure washer not running...

Low side psi before the filter pic pressure washer running...

High side psi pic...

I know the low side pics look backward. In other words it seems like the pressure would be higher when the washer is running but this is not the case the pictures are correct.

Why not manufacture an automatic industrial humidifier, for less than € 200, to avoid problems of rupture of the pump, obstruction and to avoid installation? For 25m2, more space a little more expensive

If I am not mistaken to build an industrial humidifier you need ultrasonic disk fog maker. That is what I started with from HOH They are not reliable from my experience. At this point which may change in the future. The system I build is better. To repair it only will cost $60-$75 to just buy another pressure washer, but I bought the 4 year plan so for me this is the best solution and the mushroom seem to like the environment much better. Also this is easy to expand for a larger room by adding nozzles which I plan on doing when I expand. My space maxes out at about 1600 square feet. I don't see any commercial growers using anything other than high pressure fog although I am sure some do. This can be used in as big or as small of a room as most people have,

Really I am sorry to hear that. Although I had a bad experience with their 9 disk mist makers. I wish nothing bad on them and I hope they recover. But it was probably one of there 9 disk mist makers that caught on fire and burnt the place down. So maybe I got lucky at least no fire here.

I have added this circuit to cut the power to the pressure washer. Just in case the water pressure drops below 40 psi. I hooked it up last night and it works as it should. This is a good safety device and will keep any high pressure system from burning up if water shuts off. I would suggest putting one in it cost under $30 the way I did it. One mistake I made which is not a big deal, is I bought double the wire I needed to connect the pressure switch and the relays. In the diagram remember that both red lines together represent 1 strand of 14/2 romex wire. One red line being the black and the other being the white which in reality are both power wires and in a perfect world would both be black. I just used electrical tape on the white wire to show it is actually a power wire. I do realize there is no interest in the posts I have put up in the last week or so. Evident by no response. But I hope these posts will help someone in the future...
