hydrated lime instead of gypsum for shakeability?????
    #2540374 - 04/08/04 05:25 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

I just picked up some hydrated lime.... I thought i read somewhere that you can use this instead of gypsum to promote shakeability.... I actually have a copy of the mushroom cultivator, and it says yes, but doesnt say in what amounts. Anyone help me?

Just what is shakeability really? It seems to me that the stronger the mycelium, the harder it would be to break up the grain. And of coarse we want strong, healthy mycelium. So wouldn't something that promotes "shakeability" just be growing weaker mycelium? Like for example radically adjusting the PH with something like lime?

I say just bang the hell out of your jars on the carpet or the ground outside until it's broken up--no additives. As long as the jar can take it, so can the mycelium.

common dry wall is gypsum, you can pick up a lifetime supply for a dollar at home depot... lime might work but it would change the PH and could prevent growth of mushroom mycelium and allow many different contams... make up 2 jars one with one with out, sterilize them and check the differences in PH... if you do a couple others you can innoculate them and see what grows as well....
