I dont see how you cannot be in fruiting conditions from the start. The lids aren't airtight.

On a side note I like the sterlite boxes with the rounded corners better than the boxes with the more squared off corners. I use liners and the box with rounded corners there's no plastic humps to get in the way when I go to cut my liner down to just above substrate level.

Woah :awesomenod:

How big are those bootboxes again? like 13-20l?

Whats the consensus with coir prep on sterilisation? I'm doing bucket tek for a round soon but after that I'm open to testing Bucket Cooked vs Sterilised.:pipesmoke:

Beeeaaauuuttiful.
In my limited experience, I found that PESA was a fast colonizer and big fruiter.

I have two shoeboxes that I put together 11 days ago (see post with pics a couple pages back), and the PESA colonized so quickly and thoroughly--but it's the AA+ that suddenly threw up a ton of pins. I'll post a pic this evening. I can't wait to see where it is today.

I do 3.5 qts to a brick (I like to flake them apart with a chef's knife or fork) and the bucket I use has a seal in the lid... I boil the water to a very rapid boil (basically as hot as it gets) and add it to the bucket of coir flakes... I don't open the bucket until the following day  (or whenever I'm going to use it) seems to cook a bit, and seems to perform better than if water is added that's not as hot...

Yep. The only things I do differently than Caps is I sprinkle in some verm out of the bag. Oh, I also wipe the inside of the bucket and lid before I break up my coir brick.

Well, I was disappointed that 3/4 jars stalled...and are probably bacterial.  But one decided to flourish!  CVG is cooking now, gonna make my first shoebox tonight!

I mixed up this shoebox on the 16th (I think), so this is 11 days later. 1:2 ratio AA+ BRF cake to coir/verm/castings. Side pinning is a little out of control, but based on what folks have said, I'm just going to ignore it. I went from lid to dubtub last night when I took the picture.

The box of PESA also has some pins starting to pop as of last night, too.

This one is 15L. For the first time I have too many shrooms for my dehydrator (hence the late harvest and spore explosion)

Your right about that for sure very prolific. I wanted to take some spore prints but I think they dumped them all already haha but I have some other shoeboxes

Try using a top layer of coir next time. All that moist fluffy coir across the surface makes the mushrooms want to grow there instead of the dark dank sides of the substrate.

I actually did put 1/4-1/2" substrate on top. The PESA ate through it in no time. The AA+ not as much, but it pinned much sooner. The side pin didn't start until after the top was pinning. <shruggie>

Hmm. I mean everyone gets some side pins. As long as all ur pins aren't on the sides ur doing ok lol. Some people, all they get is side pins.

Sometimes subs shrink sooner than others because the moisture content of the bulk was off. If it had just a little more moisture to begin with it wouldn't have shrank as fast, and u would probably have less or no side pins. Ull get it someday. Or, try a liner if u haven't already.

6 days after spawn and it looks like we're looking for more food and fresh air, it's almost time.

Are you still restricting FAE for a "colonization period "?

And on the 7th day there were primordia, and they were good.

Not really. Spawned then the lid was replaced. These lids leave much to be desired so there is plenty of FAE just not atmospheric conditions. The best Cubensis formations I've seen in the wild are half covered by dead or decaying palmfarns not always but it's just an observation. So I'm going for that, when pins come then atmospheric conditions follow. Stressing the cake to push for food and air until it goes for broke and decides to use all it's energy to procreate before it's too late. That's my theory anyway. It's a test box, no isolation (wish I had a flow hood) and no additives except gypsum when soaking the grain.

10 days after spawn there is obvious pinning taking place evenly across the substrate. Cluster formation can be observed near the oldest and largest pins relatively speaking.

13 days after spawn and "she's giving her all she's got captain" from basically every face of the substrate except two. My "side pins" were more than likely caused by placing the shoebox in mono putting tension on the sides and flexing the walls away from the sub when prying the lid off. I also believe in my haste to push for results I provided too much fae for the sake of these progress updates (opening the shoebox and flexing the sides away from the sub). Lesson learned. Have a few more grain jars ready, time to put my observations to the test. Still rather pleased with my results being a newbie with bulk subs. At this point I will wait for fruit maturity harvest the whole cake and get ready for round two and see what happens.

My questions to anyone reading is this: What do you do with your spent substrate? Seems like an awful waste to toss it. Thinking about throwing a couple spent cakes in a pile outside and covering it with some palmfarns. Is this more mess than it's worth? Will this attract pests and or turn to a big pile of rotting garbo that will end up smelling? Not sure how I'm going to dispose of multiple subs at a time...
