El_Segfaulto - Conspicuously handsome computer scientist at your service
    #25383344 - 08/12/18 10:54 AM (5 years, 5 months ago)

Time appropriate greeting, everyone. My name is El_Segfaulto and I'm here to help.

I've been lurking here for several months and have been blown away by the sheer amount of professional knowledge shown. I've longed to contribute but thought that it would be a number of years before I could even begin to hold conversations at a high level. And then I found this forum.

My bona fides
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science
  • 15 years working as a Linux administrator
  • Expert in cryptography, steganography, penetration testing and online security
  • A folder of useless certificates in an odd array of fields
  • 5 years of building automated systems using Arduino, Raspberry Pis, and my personal favorite, ESP8266/ESP32

Caveats:
  • I'm by no means a genius. I know how to search and have decades of experience which help me to contextualize. Please, please, please do not assume that any subject is outside of your grasp
  • No, I will not teach you how to "hack"
  • If we come across something new to me, I'll try my best to read up on the subject and will always note that I've only recently had my mental cherry popped in that field.
  • Job-related and interview questions are welcome
  • Existential and life questions and/or advice from a nerd in his 30's are acceptable.

I can go on about a myriad of topics. What I'd like to know is, what can I offer to the community? Do you want to learn how to build a server? Do you want to learn to cover your tracks better online? Do you just want to talk about how Python is clearly the best language in existence?

I'll do my utmost to check here every few days. I have a rather demanding job and run several datacenters so my hours can be a bit hectic.

Hello Segfaulto!

I am a fellow lurker as well...

I would be very interested in reading/hearing about server building.

Also I know this may be a menial question, but what would you say is the safest way for someone with a basic PC setup to manually monitor file downloads for malicious add-ons?

For home PCs running Windows, using Microsoft's Security Essentials should be plenty. But if you're delving into software that you're reasonably sure could be laden with malware then you'll want a sandbox of some sort.

The most commonly used by enthusiasts is VirtualBox. Next you'll need to choose an operating system. A lot will depend on your level of paranoia. Most people start out with Ubuntu and simply run it live (meaning no installation to a hard drive). Every time you boot it up, it's the exact same. Nothing persists. If you're willing to brave the command line, Alpine Linux is really amazing. It's minuscule, but powerful. Since it's so tiny (<100MB for a base system and 32MB of RAM), you could run dozens of them without making your host PC cry.

Ubuntu is extremely user friendly and is pretty good about not letting you bork the system accidentally. Plus it has a really good, active, and approachable community. Once you have a desktop session, all you need to do is open Firefox and cruise away. Once you download something, you'll want to run ClamAV and check it out. If it's benign then you can transfer it to your workstation. If not, you can just poweroff the virtual machine and it'll be gone.

Another cool feature is the ability to take snapshots. If you've ever played emulated games, then you'll already be familiar with the concept, though in that world they're referred to as "save states". You can be done booting in a completely fresh, known to be good session, take a snapshot, and then revert to that exact moment in time whenever you need to.

If you're of the sort that refuses to wear aluminum foil hats because everybody knows that only tin blocks the CIA's mind control rays. Or if you really need privacy at the expense of UI friendliness, then check out the Tails. This is the sort of thing that you would use if you were a dissident in a fascist regime, or wanted to explore the darker parts of web. It comes with TOR preinstalled and configured.

The best part about options 1 and 2 is that by bringing them up, you've also built a server!

Here is a good primer and guide to getting started.

Option 4 would be to just stick with Windows and assume that the engineers at Microsoft keep you patched against zero day exploits and can pick up every variety of malware. Windows 10 has a much better privilege system than its predecessors and is definitely a lot more difficult to break into.

It really comes down to how you want to invest your time. By knowing Linux I'm able to build/program temperature/humidity/soil moisture sensors and have them report to a central server in my house. (Just as an example). That's also possible in Windows, but most open source software treats it as a second-class citizen and there are a lot more hoops to jump through. Plus, most of us are here because we love building.

Thanks for the response, these are great suggestions!

Am going to try Ubuntu within the VirtualBox, as it seems the safest and most foolproof for my needs. The snapshot feature is really cool I was wondering how people saved their digital OS.

Also apparently you can install Alpine Linux on a RasberryPi so I might have to try this.

Anyways appreciate the post man, windows/google has been giving me a lot of "false positives" and I let myself get infected like a dumbass after disabling my firewall.
