Can you use a BRF jar broken up to start new jars ?
    #25411593 - 08/25/18 06:29 AM (2 years, 8 months ago)

I have two dozen 1/2 pint BRF jars going pretty well and was just wondering if I could break up say one jar to start 10 or more new jars. Instead of using another spore syringe.

Yes search for "crumbling" and "pf slurry". The first one is breaking up the cake using a variety of methods, the second is blending it with some water to create an liquid inoculate. Personally I wouldn't break up a cake unless the jar had self-healing ports and a synthetic disk filter.

Edit: I don't grammar good

So use a clean blender and distilled water to whip a BRF cake to a slurry.  Then pour into already pced cakes?

id think thatd be hard to do without fucking up your moisture content and making your cakes to wet. if your set on expanding one of your cakes id crumble it to bulk, trays or mono.

I've never done slurry since it seems like too much trouble for what it's worth. I have done a lot of liquid cultures to PF, using as much as 15-20ml in a half pint. As long as you offset the water ratio when you're putting together the ingredients it turns out fine.

If you don't compensate for the extra liquid you can end up with a jar of shit! Here's what happened to a PF jar I added too much liquid to by mistake after shaking it (this was an experiment with PF+SHIP):

wow. it's been a while since i dropped by this forum. you can break up any colonized media and expand it to new sterile media as long as you remain sterile in the process. this is a bit advanced for the unpracticed but is easily attainable with a little time and knowledge.

what is it you want to know about breaking it up to spawn to bulk?

Wouldn't breaking up the BRF cakes hurt the mycelium?
