Easy rye and wheat spawn prep

Just wanted to put up an easy prep for rye or wheat spawn. Most preps call for rinsing, soaking and or boiling/simmering and then drying before sterilizing. Instead of all those steps I just PC the grains twice. Once for 30 - 40 minutes and again for an hour. For rye quart jars, i use 250ml rye to 225-250ml water and 1/8 tsp gypsum. For wheat, I use 400ml wheat and 100-125ml water and 1/4 tsp gypsum. The wheat I get is horse feed and is way less dense than rye. At 1:1 a lot of the wheat grains will explode and glue themselves together. That's also why I up the gypsum for the wheat as it's stickier than rye. After the first round the jars can be shaken or if I'm making mycobaags I'll dump the jars out and mix well to get the wetter and dryer grains homogenized, load and seal the bags and cook for another hour. Here's a pic of a wheat jar done in this fashion.

It’s an old technique and the pictured jar isn’t a very good example as it’s hard red winter wheat. I used to prep grain like this back in the 90s and did so when I started back up a couple years ago but now do a 15-20 min boil/simmer, followed by fanning dry. You can definitely play around with it but you’ll get better results doing a boil or soak on the grain and then sterilizing. 90 minutes is definitely the minimum especially if you’re filling the PC; I’d recommend 2 hrs.

Ha, no worries. Just goes to show how our techniques evolve/change.

I've been using oats and this new bag is giving me a lot of trouble. I am thinking wheat, as rye isn't available 'round these parts'. I like the idea of a soak only. I did do a soak only prep with my last run of oats and am waiting to see how they turn out. With wheat, would I just follow any rye tek? Are they interchangeable?
Thanks

More or less. What was the issue with your oats?

After a week or so the jars seem to have a lot of moisture in them. Even though I let them steam dry for an hour.
