Casing Problems - 1st timer
    #2540690 - 04/08/04 08:52 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I crumbeled two PF style jars into earth worm casings 3 weeks ago. For 1 week I allowed it to sit in an incubator at 86 degree w/ no light. I then took it out and put it in a fruiting chamber where the humidity is 89% and temp is about 72 degrees.

When i opened it after it sat in the incubator, white mycelium was poking through. I covered it up with casing layer.

I had heard that scratching the mycelium makes it fruit better.

Every 3-4 days I've been poking around with a sterile fork looking for pins on the white mycelium.

I haven't seen anything resembling a pin or anything.

It has been two weeks, I've been fanning and misting.

Where am I going Wrong??

Can anyone help?

Any good suggestions???

Thanks,

dan17511

Stop poking around, just keep it at high humidity and give it a fanning now and then.

Hi, Dan. You might want to let the castings colonize completely before applying a casing layer (actually wait a few days after they appear completely colonized). After you see myc. poking through the casing layer evenly throughout, then it is time to introduce fruiting conditions (i.e., light, fresh air, reduced temps, appropriate rh, etc.). Would anyone recommend removal of the casing layer and reintroduction to incubation?

I really hope you took that away before they lit it.

Stop the poking, for God's sake. Everytime you do that it damages the mycellium and just when it rebuilds itself, you probably scratch it again. Leave it alone and give it a week at least before worrying.
