Vermiculite Vs. Pearlite??
    #2540657 - 04/08/04 08:43 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I went to the store today and went to the garden department. I could not find it anywhere so I asked someone. The guy said they do not stock it anymore because it is hazardous to the environment but they have a substitute, 'Pearlite'. I didnt get it because I didnt know whether or not it would work.....Has anyone used it?

I didnt know that vermiculite was hazardous or how but I am still going to check at other stores but has anyone heard of this?

verm is not hazardous, thats just misinformation by somone that doesnt know what they are talking about.
Perlite you will need but not untill later when your mushrooms are in the fruiting stage. You cannot substitute perlite for verm.
try another store, its spring now,so walmart, agway, hope depot ect...will all have it.If all else fails check the sponsers here a few sell it.But there really is no substitute. The only other thing to do is if you have a Pressure cooker you can use grains, but if not and you are doing the PF tek,you need vermiculite.check out this link on verm.

Vermiculate info

Let me guess you went to home depot? Cause they said the same thing and they are not interchangeable. Get perlite if you want to use it in a fruiting chamber and get the vermiculite if your going to do casings or cakes. If you have a lowes or any other garden store they carry it.

You need vermiculite to do PF jars, you can not use perlite as a substitute. I went to ACE hardware, dont know if u have one around you, but a store like that will suffice, and i was able to pick up a bag of perlite and verm. The verm you need to use in the jars and the perlite you soak with water and put in the bottom of your terranium to keep the humidity at almost 100%. The perlite does a very good job if you are just doing cakes. If you are doing casings you can usually keep the humidity high enough by just spraying it with the water/h202 mix whenever needed.

Both Ace and Home Deopot had told me that they do not carry it anymore for the same reasons. I would imagine the bigger companys were put under pressure to stop selling it because of the false scare of asbethis or whatever a while back.

Try smaller garden stores or you can order it online but shipping is a little expensive.

Yes, Walmart no longer carries it at all, same with all other major "mart" stores. Your best bet is a nursery, or someplace that deals only in plant/garden supplies.
