Today in psychedelic history (08/21)
    #18736039 - 08/21/13 05:58 AM (10 years, 7 months ago)

  • 1957:  Smith, Kline and French pharmaceutical company release internal memo titled “Report on Clinical Evaluation of SKF #5 (Amphedoxamine) [MDA]”

Quote:

Roberts AS, Alexander F.
“Report on Clinical Evaluation of SKF #5 (Amphedoxamine) [MDA]”.
[Memo, 1957 Aug 21]. 1957 Aug 21;.

In nine completed investigations over 400 patients including a wide gamut of clinical psychiatric entities have been treated with SKF #5 (amphedoxamine). Results relative to therapeutic efficacy and reported side reactions have been quite variable. The following is a summary of the significant data from each of the investigators. When available, complete reports on each of the investigations is included in the bulk of the report together with pertinent tables and graphs. Samples of the case report form and the rating scale used in the Twenty Practitioner Investigation, together with basic data and the investigation circular are included.

Gordon Alles licensed MDA to Smith Kline and French, who evaluated it in several patient populations and, for a time, considered it as a potential antidepressant. Interested readers can click through to two documents from that era. First, Friedhoff and colleagues’ Preliminary study of a new anti-depressant drug and, second, Roberts and Alexander’s Report on Clinical Evaluation of SKF #5 (Amphedoxamine). As you can see on its final page, the Roberts and Alexander document (which was a 1957 Smith, Kline and French Internal Report) has quite the pedigree: it was sent to Alexander Shulgin by Ibrahim Turek, who worked at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center on clinical hallucinogen studies, including some with MDA.

  • 1974:  Nick Sand is released on bail

Quote:

The charges against Nick and Judy in St. Louis were eventually dismissed due to illegal search and seizure. Nick was transferred from the jail in Missouri to the jail in San Francisco where he remained in custody during pretrial preparations and during the conspiracy trial, which began with opening statements on November 12, 1973. Nick and Judy married while he was in the San Francisco jail. The trial lasted for several months, concluding with closing statements on January 25, 1974. Nick Sand and Tim Scully were both convicted on multiple charges on January 30, 1974, and sentenced on March 8, 1974, respectively to 15 and 20 years in prison. Nick was eventually sent to McNeil Island penitentiary to begin serving his 15-year sentence.

Nick was not able to post bail initially because Judge Conti had set his appeal bail at $500,000, all required in cash. After several months at McNeil Island, Tim Scully won an appeal for bail reduction and Nick was able to ride on his coattails. Nick was released on appeal bond August 21, 1974. He returned to the San Francisco Bay Area where he lived on a houseboat in Sausalito and trained to be an operating room technician as the appeals unfolded.

The report doesn't seem too favorable toward MDA, a lot of the evaluations suggested little therapeutic value. Then again, they were administering small doses daily if I understand correctly, which has got to be pretty taxing on the serotonin system. That plus a lot of the patients were psychotic to begin with. Interesting nonetheless.

Yeah, if they weren't finding thereputic value in MDA, then like you said, they weren't dosing high enough.

45th anniversary of Nick Sand being released on bail.  He would eventually jump bail and go underground until he was captured in 1996.

I vastly prefer MDA over MDMA, but like a 70:30 ratio of MDA/MDMA is the best overall.  MDMA tends to be more therepeutic in regards to therapy sessions with a guide, whereas MDA seems to have more recreational therapy value, as in the therapy comes from recreational experiences with friends or by one self.

LSD + MDA/MDMA + Ketamine is the winner.  A few puffs of DMT at the peak and baby you got yourself a psychedelic stew going.

I wouldn't mind trying the MDA/MDMA combo that you mention, but adding the ketamine and DMT is way too far for me. Hell, I wouldn't try DMT by itself, much less in combo with anything else. Anyway, today is the 70th anniversary of Smith, Kline and French pharmaceutical company releasing an internal memo entitled “Report on Clinical Evaluation of SKF #5 (Amphedoxamine) [MDA]”.

I recently got the pleasure of trying MDA for the first time and it's a wonderful compound.
