problems w/ casing layer?
    #2539962 - 04/08/04 05:45 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

my friends is having problems with his casing layer, this is the 3rd time this has happened, I'll explain his process let me know if there's any changes that should be made. GT's innoculated to popcorn in quarts and pint jars, they take over just fine, spawned to straw in 10" x 10" bins, straw takes over just fine, then comes the casing layer 60/40 verm coir, he normally waits until small spots of mycelium show then puts them in the fruiting chamber, this time he waited until it was close to 90% taken over and still same results they will not fruit.... grow chamber consists of martha stewart closet from kmart, vicks kaz humidifier for air exchange humidity and also another humidifier on the inside to help the kaz at times, humidity always stays around 90%-100%, there is plenty of light as well. anyone have any ideas???? he's bout ready to just go back to casing wbs to 60/40.

How long are you waiting before calling it quits? So much effort for nothing... temps in the low 70's for fruiting?

he has waited up past 30 days...I don't know what to tell him, there's some parameter thats not right... straw is usually 6+ inches deep, casing layer he has tried 1/2" to just enough to cover the mycelium.

I think his casing layer could be a little thicker maybe ,but im not sure if this would help initiate fruiting,as much as it would help to sustain healthy growth once they kick it in gear.

what does the casing layer look like ? does it seem to be overlayed. in the past when this happend did you slice this casing in half to check for any rots ? sounds as if you have great condidtions maybe allitle to much humidity for a casing but shouldnt affect no fruits aborts maybe

hmm....too much humidity, there's no drainage holes in the containers? you think that might be questionable

For casings you will want to keep humidity between 82 and 92. What kind of light are you giving it and how long? Whats the temp in the fruiting chamber? Are you giving your casing airflow?

humidity is usually higher than 92, its a florecent light, same used in past grows, air flow is a kaz humidifier on the out side of the chamber pump'n air in. temp is upper 70's. Checking for rots has me thinking, I wonder if he should put drainage holes in his casings.

wow, 10-14 days... he soaks the corn 24 hrs, then boils it til he can squeeze it between his fingers. I've read over at nans nook that the problem is with corn is it colonizes easily but getting it to fruit is the problem... We'll see, test #4 is underway starting today

Get the humidity down to about 85%, that will be a lot better for the casing.
