WASHINGTON - Federal regulators Thursday proposed $495,000 in indecency fines against Clear Channel Communications for broadcasts by shock jock Howard Stern.

Edit:  (Please post the article with the URL)

The FCC (news - web sites) cited the nation's largest radio chain for 18 alleged violations on April 9, 2003.

Clear Channel suspended Stern last month from its six stations that carry his program, which regularly features graphic sexual discussion and humor.

In a statement posted on his Web site, Stern said he was not surprised. He characterized the fine as furtherance of a "witch hunt" against him by the Bush administration.

"It is pretty shocking that governmental interference into our rights and free speech takes place in the U.S.," he said. "It's hard to reconcile this with the 'land of the free' and the 'home of the brave.'"

I dont think what we show on TV is that bad...and the main reason why this is happening is the "think of the children" people, sameones that have drugs illegal. And its understandable but I think we got out of hand from shielding children to lieing to them. We're creating a fake world for them to see where Santa Clause and the tooth fairy rule.

The mentality that children shouldn't see boobs or use bad world before 18 is wrong and unnatural. This is going to be hard for people to except, was for me for awhile, but be realistic. By 13 most kids are cursing, kissing, watching porn, and masturbating. And thats already w/ extreame outter pressure from the 'adult' world to keep us away from it. Its normal!

And how much was Janet Jackson fined? As she was the one who brought the FCC's unwanted attention to television/radio...

The problem is that we as a society are using TV's to raise our children. We just give the little rascals video game station and a DVD player and run off to do our own thing.

You're right, the stuff on TV isn't that bad, for adults. But I believe that some things on TV are not for children. They sometimes do not understand the context that some things are given or they simply are not mature enough to comprehend what it is that they see.

Instead of resticting the out put of the TV, we should focus on individual responsibilties as parents or guardians. If you want to impart certain values to your children then you have to be active in the proccess. When I was growing up, the whole family watched what Mom and Dad wanted to watch or they didn't watch anything at all. There was only one TV in my house for a very long time. I'm fairly certain it was not intentional but I do believe it was beneficial. You don't have to raise completely naive kids, but you can also control how they are introduced to ideas that might shape their values or life decissions.

It's normal for who. Normal is basicaly what happens most often. Well, that can change from year to year, hell, day to day. What's normal one day might be a rarety the next. I'll tell you what was normal when I was a young lad of school age. I wouldn't have dared to use foul language in front of any adult. I even restrained it's use amoung my peers for fear that somehow my parents might find out. I had respect and reverence for them and I'll still never forget the first time I uttered a four lettered word in their presence. I was 20 years old and I still felt that same dread as I did when I was a child and awaiting punishment. My punishment was the look of dissapointmant on their faces. Back then, that was normal where I'm from. For the most part it still is today.

I will never forget one of my Grandmothers friends talking one time about her husband and getting married. She said something like, "We got married and seven months later we had a baby." She then leaned over to me and whispered, "We used to make them faster back then."

Some things never change... why we feel the need to repress ourselves, I will never understand.

Everythings just all backwards-afied. Why are they going after howard stern, and not the makers of the "booty popin" video they show late night on bet? I swear to god you can see coochy lips! that blew my mind.
The censors have slowly been allowing more fun stuff on the air, and than they'r gonna go after howard stern for having a potty mouth. Hasn't that been the case for like 20 years?
censorship is wrong

> Why are they going after howard stern

For the same reason they went after Tommy Chong... ratings.  Who pays any attention if they bust Shock Jock John Doe with only 300 listeners?  The FCC wants people to listen to them, so they bust somebody that a lot of people listen to.  The DEA wanted to bust somebody that a lot of people know, hence they went after Tommy.  Political prisoners... welcome to land of the free where home is called jail.  It is sad that Ashcroft uses the constitution for toilet paper.  :frown:
