Friendship7 said: I tried drying with silica, but i had too many so i used the oven. I put them in for an hour to 75 minutes on low heat with the door cracked. I cracked each one in half to make sure they were done. Put them in a large masons jar with the silica, and put it in a cool dark place for use the next week.
All the stars lined up. I had the extra time, i was with good people, and i was ready to have fun. I opened the masons jar, and somehow every single mushroom was reconstituted, wet, almost black, and putrid. I was pissed to say the least. Not wanting to fuck up my whole masons jar full i put them back on the cookie sheet, put those fuckers back in the oven, turned up the temp a little more, and 10 minutes later i hear the fucking wife screaming that the house was stinking. I fucking burned them up. The house was putrid for 2 days. The wife was pissed at me for a week. I still ate a handful of those disgusting burned putrid all ready bad tasting things. I was dry heaving every bite on my peanut butter sandwich. puked it all up. then started over (i was not going to fail damnit!) I barely got a buzz off of them after i was able to keep them down. In between my wife being pissy i told her it wouldn't have happened if i could just get a dehydrator. She was like 'i almost got one at wally world the other day'. WTF?
My cakes were almost all used up. But i was able to get a few more from what was left. put them in the new dehydrator over night. They came out perfectly crisp.
I made the mistake of not letting them dry enough, then burning them. But my biggest mistake was being a cheap ass after all the hard work i put into getting them to grow. The dehydrator was 35 bucks at wal mart. If you cant afford that you probably shouldn't be buying beer or cigs.
I'll do a trial run with butons ffs lol

Dam I didn’t even consider I’d need to get something to dry them :/ this is getting more and more expensive. How much did that run you?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but what kind of light cycle do you use with this tek? What type of coir? I was checking on amazon and I guess there’s like fine consistency to I guess a more chunky type. How’s this one? https://www.amazon.com/Kempf-Compressed-Growing-Potting-10-Pound/dp/B003MOD2HY/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1534391172&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=coco+coir&dpPl=1&dpID=513To44LI2L&ref=plSrch

Food dehydrators used to be a very popular home item and really aren't any longer. If you checkout your local craigslist / salvation army / good will you will find a ton of them for next to nothing (< $20).

Thanks for the reply. I’m going to start looking but worst case scenario this would work? https://www.amazon.com/Presto-06300-Dehydro-Electric-Dehydrator/dp/B008H2OELY/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1534420586&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=food+dehydrator&dpPl=1&dpID=512NvMxTjtL&ref=plSrch I’m not planning on having large amounts. I’m sticking to cakes for a while and currently only have 4 cakes colonizing

Mushrooms want high humidity and they breathe oxygen.
As long as you can create high humidity and allow adjustable FAE you got yourself a fruiting chamber
I put soaking wet coir inside plastic tub, you could use wet vermiculite or a towel for that matter. Find something soaking wet, put it inside a plastic tub and you got the perfect FC for miniature substrates such as 1/2 pint BRF cakes. Flip the lid upside down or place it slightly ajar for FAE.
The more FAE you allow the more you're gonna have to mist. Constrict FAE if you're going out of town for a few days
Looks like this:
Noobs, post your results here!
Would the verm base be more susceptible to contam? I’ve read about people running hot water through coir to I guess sterilize it in a way. Would you do that to the berm?

All jars showed signs of growth on the 12th, 4 days later, one jar showed signs the day before. The 11th.
I’ve been watching closely because I’ve heard that some contams race mycelium and can grow rather rapidly. But there’s no discoloration, and the strands are quite visible and thicken by the day.

When did your jars first start showing signs of colonization? I inoculated mine on the 14th, nothing yet but I think that's pretty normal.
Also, Kwyjibo, I sent you a PM, so make sure to check that

so here ... it looks like you have a few different varieties in one chamber (right?) ... what are your thoughts on the risk of contamination by doing this?
Also - looking at your cakes and substrate ... are the mushrooms pulling nutrients from the coir? or is that here simply for humiditys sake?

Just a natural light cycle in a windowed room with the blinds down and closed. The chamber rests elevated off the ground, atop another bin. There are certainly more ideal setups but this suffices in this case.

Visit your local pet store. They'll more than likely have some.

Cool thank you for the reply. The room I have them in rn is a bit warm so I was thinking of bringing my tub in where I have ac and fixing the light to the lid for a 12/12 cycle. What do you think?

You can fruit anywhere from about 65-80 degrees from what I've heard, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.
I'm not sure but I think the light is better indirect, so what I'm doing is hooking up a light in my closet about 5-6 feet above the containers and possibly a few feet away from them so they get light, but not directly. I'm not sure if putting the light right ON the lid is the best idea for heat, as well...
Also, panflake, check your pms

Direct artifical light is not an issue but direct sunlight can hurt the colony if exposed to too much sun.
Last winter I fruited with 24h light in my grow room never switched the lights off during the winter and mushrooms great just fine
I also know from experience that they grow just fine with only 6-8h daylight per day.

I got my first ever pins using this tek!
Also interesting how the myc from my cakes has jumped onto the lids and then the coir.

Mycelium was thirsty I guess. Looked like the plates the cakes were on were a bit flat. Maybe that encouraged that. Myc has grown up the side of my PF tek jars. What I should have done was wipe the inside edge of the jar to. I wiped the rim and lip on the outside as recommended by everyone, in order to best keep the jar sealed. I didn’t account for what would happen inside the jar. The myc isn’t leaving any verm unturned in the search for nutrients.

The light I got doesn’t give off any heat https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00291XISO?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title What light cycle would you think would give best results? I assume the wet coir will stay wet longer since it doesn’t give off heat

Finished cakes.
Not bad at all,for the work I had to put in.(harldy any maintainence, minimal misting, never upped FAE in any way) Alot better than some of my SGFC cake attempts.
