Anyone into amateur/"HAM" Radio? DIY radio basically
    #25390794 - 08/15/18 06:11 PM (5 years, 6 months ago)

Had never heard of it before today, takes licensing still but seems pretty cool: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amateur_radio#Licensing

Wondering how much it would cost to set up a local HAM music station :strokebeard: Seems like at least 200-300$ for gear and a test to get licensed. Could be really fun.

Anyone have any experience with amateur radio?

I think it used to be a lot more popular before the internet when talking to random people far away was more of a novelty. Knew a few families growing up where the dad had a ham radio set.

In my old neighborhood there was an amateur tv station. Seemed to broadcast test patterns most of the time. I have a little box that will transmit analog TV on UHF channels 14-17.

Shortwave radio can be kind of cool. Lots of weird state-run radio aimed at an English speaking audience. Plus lots of weird conspiracy shit from Art Bell and Alex Jones types.

Yeah that makes sense, still seems cool for some stuff though.

I don't think you can use HAM gear for a music station. The FCC regulates what types of things can be transmitted on what frequencies.
The amateur radio bandwidths are for communication, as opposed to broadcasting. They are only for talking with other amateur radio operators. One-way transmissions are illegal.

HAM radio is the most reliable system of communication in a disaster/emergency situation. It doesn't rely on any outside infrastructure.

Walkie talkies that can bounce their signal off the moon and talk to people on the other side of the planet!
That will still work when your cell phone, internet, tv and fm radio all go down!

How powerful of a radio would you need for that though? I doubt some of the simpler/cheap radios used would work nearly that far :strokebeard:

my father erected a 40'+ tall tower in our backyard (in the suburbs) just to boost his HAM capabilities.  When he would turn it on, it would knock out or scramble cable TV signals on the whole block.  Biggest fucking waste of money.

But the concept of HAM is pretty neato.

My old roomie was super big into HAM stuff.  We mounted a 25 foot antenna to the house and he often had weird conversations with people around the globe.  A lot of truckers too.  It's amazing how talkative foreign truckers are in russia.

HAM radios are certainly popular in apocalyptic sci fi movies.
