"Root" by the Deftones is what made me want to play guitar......As for drums, I don't remember, i think I just always wanted to after years of tapping on desks in school

Geez, it was so long ago i don't even really remember. Back then I was listening to crap like Green Day and Nirvana. Probably something like "Smells Like Teen Spirit", but I'm not sure one song alone influenced me to pick up the guitar.

I started classical violin at age 6 - no choice, and I hated it untill I moved out and didn't have to play any more.
I still play, and have been listening to bluegrass, trying to move over. I listen to plenty of rock (recently the GD), but there's no fiddle in there.
I'd like to be able to play the music I like, but it'll take some innovation, since the fiddle isn't a rock instrument.
I think the fiddle has a melencholy tone, and won't fit into any music that is too pure angry/happy/anything else.

oh yeah, when i was 11 i saw the movie "Crossroads" it starred Ralph Machio (Karate Kid) as a young classical guitar prodigy, who breaks an old blues man out of a nursing home in New York, to take him back to Hwy 61 in mississippi where the old man had sold his Soul to Legma in order to become a famous musician. @ the end of the movie, the Karate Kid has a guitar duel w/ Jack Butler (Steve Vai) that's when i said "Mom, i want to learn how to play guitar" thanx for reminding me of that...

I play all instruments..so all music I guess "my" instrument would be guitar though sooo.. I have to be honest..Bush. Them and Nirvana back in the seventh grade ..I still think Nigel Pulsford? has a awesome sound..simlistic but clean.. and good. later Hendrix and SRV gave me a sharp bluesy turn..and later again, my first book Metallica-Kill em All, turned me on to metal.. now days I get inspired everywhere! from other guitarists ..to symphonies ..from electronic music to the sound of a river..music rules
What turned me on to bass was PRIMUS specifically The Toys Come Winding ..those triplet gallops ..ooo man thats cool ..also Led Zepplin's Ramble on
Rush 2112 got me wantin to play drums.. Neil pert is unbelievable..
most recently the jazz stations got me playin piano..I cant wait till im good ..im gonna make some cool samples on keyboard I wish I owned a guitar center.. pretty much every instrument I see I want to play.

Actually, a friend of mine who played guitar made me want to pick up the instrument. However, it was "Galapagos" by Smashing Pumpkins that made me want to write music.

the only thing that inspired me to play the guitar was the want to express myself through music instead of words.
I will be buying a bass guitar soon though.. and what inrpires me to play the bass is oysterhead.

John Frusciante really inspires me in the acoustical guitar area. he just makes me want to funk it out on the guitar while i wail in high pitch emotive vocals.

When I was a kid, my mom had a tape called "Jive Bunny and the Mastermixes"
it was a DJ mixing together al these old 50's and 60's rock songs. I must've played that tape 100 times and just danced my ass off in the basement.
First thing you hear is.. "Ladies an gentlemen! The one and only! J-J-J-JIVE BUNNY AND THE MASTERMIXES" then it breaks out into Little Richard Tutti-Frutti
WELL ALLRIGHT EVERYBODY! WHOP BOB A LOO BA A WHOP BAM BOO!
memories right there! LOL you can download the song if you want,
just search - "Jive Bunny and the Mastermixes - The Rock n Roll Party Mix"

You should check out Bob Dylan's Desire album, particularly "Hurricane". His band had a fiddle player at that point.

Old thread, oh well. I can't remember why I took up bass many years ago but just recently I have put the bass down for an acoustic guitar, I want to learn classical mostly because of 'Cavatina' by Stanley Myers (theme song in The Deer Hunter)

Not a song, but a traditional blues riff, played by my dads friend, inspired me to play guitar.
But what really got me to keep playing was the entire Alice in Chains Unplugged album.

Honestly, I'd have to say what got me started playing guitar was Drop D tuning. So long ago, my friend showed me how to play a simple power chord on any fret in Drop D. I took that and ran... I've been self-teaching ever since.
However, here are a few songs/riffs/pieces that have inspired me to keep at it and get better: (God, this is going to make me look young...)
311 - Beautiful Disaster (especially the two-guitar solos... god I love those. Easily one of my favorite things to play with another guitarist)
Incubus - Just a Phase (Especially the intro riff, but honestly, the whole song just blows my mind...)
Incubus - Mexico
Shinedown - Simple Man
Third Eye Blind - Thanks a lot (particularly that solo... it just zings right into my soul)
Chili Peppers - Under the bridge (intro riff especially)
Nonpoint - Hide and Seek (intro/verse riff)
Eric Clapton - Layla (live acoustic version)

Kurt Cobain got an electric guitar for christmas..had no amp His mom got pissed at her BF (after her and kurts dad's divorce) and told kurts sister to throw all the guns in the house in the river be she shot the dude.. Kurt paid some kids 5$ to fish the duffle bag of guns out of the river and turned around and pawned them for his first guitar amp..
I got so into guitar and inspired by kurt's "anything for guitar" motives.. At age 16 I did some pretty illegal shit (stupid now that i'm older) to get money for this amp:
ANYTHING FOR MUSIC MAN!
On top of that piece of inspiring dedication.. Nirvana in general, the whole 3 man band, emotional passion nirvana entailed..
Nirvana - Lake of fire (Meatpuppets cover from Unplugged in New York) Made me pick up a guitar and learn...
Since then I've aquired over 30 guitars, written 22 songs, recorded on analog reel to reel (going digital soon, look for link in my sig)
^ Wow, got carried away there for a min. ^
Summary: Nirvana - lake of fire <- good stuff..
