The Official Nicotiana Growers Thread * 4
    #25384858 - 08/13/18 05:26 AM (2 years, 8 months ago)

Who else here enjoys the rewarding experience of growing and curing your own tobacco?

This has been my first season growing tobacco and it's given me a new appreciation for the Nicotiana genus.

I have a mix of virginiana and rustica that I started by seed, bu unforrunately the seedlings growth lagged behind cause I waited way too long fo pull them off the tray and ouf of the coir pellets.
We usually never get freezing temps till late October, so we shall see if that's enough time to mature... :strokebeard:

Luckily a cactus homie hooked me up with an established virginiana last fall.
I managed to overwinter it and now the thing is massive! (For only being in a container at least).

This here tobacco is the one that gave me the itch:

Getting all those seedpods was exciting for me. It would be a dream to go dark from the tobacco industry all together.

Here's a jar of a couple leaves I cured.

Only took about two of some moderate sized leaves to fill up this pint jar...
I may have to move up in jar size

Been rolling small cigarettes with it and miraculously it tastes quite good. The  burn you get is different, more subtle, probably cause of the lack of chemical treatment.

Nice, man. Glad to see a tobacco thread up in here.

I've only grown N. Rustica twice, but I was too impatient to cure it and just let it dry for about a week or so (which i really regret). Been using it in a waterpipe to cut the harshness.

Here's a photo of the em from a few months ago.

I grew a few Virginia Gold & some rustica last year. I honestly find rustica very unpleasant to smoke, it's really harsh. I'd be interested in a rapé recipe too. I've had some Nu-Nu snuff it's pretty nice.

I've had a bunch of volunteer rustica plants pop up in various pots this year, these seeds really get everywhere. Here's one I kept:

I do the lazy mans tek. Let the dead leaves dry on the plant for a while. Seems like when they're attached to the plant they will dry up slower than if you just pick the leaf off. Also I'm sure the daily watering helps it dry slower and the sunlight helps mellow out the harshness.
I let mine sit on the plant for about a month before it turned the color you see in that jar.
Smells and tastes super smooth and mellow. Has a sweet aroma to it that I find very pleasing.

When I want to harvest the whole plant, I'll just stop watering it and let it slowly pass on that way. Let the dead plant sit out getting 2-3 hrs sunlight for a month or so.

I hear rustica can taste pretty good using this lazy mans tek as well. I actually first heard about it through someone that only grows rustica, so maybe y'all should give it a try!

:takingnotes:

I'll take some picture's today.

This is my first year growing anything from seeds so I had some germination issues.
I also planted way late.

Finally got a pot to sprout but between a bad rain storm and me not thinning them out.
They are way behind.

Has anyone tried hybridizing tobaccum and rustica?
I'm hopefully about to have both flowering next to each other so I'm hoping I can cross pollinate some. :strokebeard:

Just tried this with some leaves that'd died and dried up on the plant...they're definitely smoother and easier to smoke, BUT there doesn't seem to be much/if any nicotine at all. I can't say I was surprised, they're dead leaves after all...

Interesting, my tobaccum leaves seem to have low-to-moderate amounts of nicotine after drying/curing this way; but it's definitely enough for me to still catch a buzz (though I don't smoke cigs so my tolerance to nicotine is low).

How long did you let them sit for? And were they in the sun?

I have my tobacco in containers, so when I am letting the leaves dry like that I bring them under more shade where they only get a few hours of direct sunlight.

Yeah, I don't smoke cigarettes either...the rustica was a rough introduction.

They hung dead for about a week or so, and yeah they were in the sun. Mine are in the ground so I can't move em around unfortunately.

Just found this thread on hybridizing tabacum and rustica:
http://fairtradetobacco.com/threads/7679-N-Tabacum-x-N-Rustica

Looks like you have to cross with rustica as the female in order to receive viable seeds that will produce further viable generations.

Hopefully I can get something to happen this season before it's too late. :igor:

My tabacum is still flowering hard too...

Time to start hybridizing.  :plot:

Anyone have experience with hydroponic tobacco? I feel like it could be wildly successful if I got enough nutes concentrated in the water. I tried earlier this year but they just kinda languished and eventually dissolved.

Not personally, but the largest tobacco plant I've ever seen was growing in an aquaponics system. So I imagine hydroponics would work if done properly.

I wasn't specific but meant aquaponics. Do you remember what the growing medium was?

I'm not sure what it was started in, but it was growing on hydroton. (the little clay balls)
