All Along The Watchtower
    #2538341 - 04/08/04 08:49 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

What do you guys think this song is about?
It definitely seems to have some sort of deeper meaning, but i really dont know what....
Either way it's still a great song
What are your theories?

here are the lyrics:

"There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief,
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.
Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth,
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."

"No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke,
"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate,
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late."

All along the watchtower, princes kept the view
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.

Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl,
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

I know both versions, but now I'm confused. Who originally wrote the song? Hendrix or Dylan?
All along, I thought it was Hendrix

I'm quite sure that Dylan wrote it, but Hendrix made it more famous... I always interpreted it as the only people in our modern society who can see through it/want it to change are portrayed as jokers or thieves.

"There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief,
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief."

The Joker howls this question to the thief. It's a question I myself and probably all you guys have been asking along the way. But who are these two characters conversing?

The Joker continues bitchin' and hints at life's basic unfairness:

"Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth,
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."

In the next stanza the Thief answers by recognition of the truth in the observation stated. This is followed by a challenge reminding the Joker that both of them are through watching life as merely a joke. The thief also states that time is running out:

"No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke,
"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate,
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late."

What the Thief seems to suggest is that life is either a joke or it is not... Eh... And as Time keeps on, the Search for Truth becomes essential. Hmmpphr...?

This dialogue seems to be internal. The Thief and the Joker representing archetypes dwelling in the human psyche. The Joker
being the wild card, the anyone; the ego experiencing itself isolated. Stuck in suffering. The Thief on the other hand
representing a darker, more mystical essence of man. He seems like the Outlaw. The honest Outlaw. "To live outside the Law, one needs to be honest." With a calm, still voice he is stealing the preferred illusion from the ego.

The tendency of the Joker is of course to take life as a joke and to play with his mighty but temporary potential in the Game of Life. Often he will be a knight or an eight just to win the round. In the next he might be totally useless.

Whatever. But a point seems to be that Dylan has found pearcingly accurate names for these two sides of the Self. The Joker representing the aspect of the self intellectually aware of itself as differing from the rest of creation. The Thief on the other hand representing the aspect which is spiritually aware of it self as part of the Union of Creation. The two crashes into conflict. The Joker as the ego vs the Thief hiding in the Cave of the Soul. The Thief is the Christ ("who died a criminal's death") who comes from a Place beyond the law of matter.

The existential question in the song is THE QUESTION of reality. Body and Spirit. The delicate balance of this inner struggle is outlined in the following:

"Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth,
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."

The Thief steals our illusion, our property.

The next line switches perspective from the ego to a view downwards from the Heavenly Spheres, followed the Souls inner experiences while on earth:

"All along the watchtower, princes kept the view
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.

Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl,
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl. "

While the male is ego, the women is a symbol for Souls. A line stretching from the SUFI's etc. The princes who kept the view are enlightened beings, the hierarchy, bodhisattvas. The situation seems to be as follows; stuck in between the confusion tormenting the still uncrowned ego and the dark uncertainty of the Soul, we see to riders approaching. To go with the Joker, the Ego, means reducing Life to merely a joke. While walking with the Thief means opening up for the unknown, head for the distant shores, and requires FAITH.

The choice is ours to make.
