Yup, getting a hole drilled in your skull to cure ailments. :whoa: Not only is their serious possibility of infection, the chance of drilling through the cerebral membrane and other complications, but one forever has a vulnerable spot on their head.

Who said wacky beliefs can be dangerous?

Um, excuse me, but may I inquire? WTF would do such a thing, and for what reason???

Was just watching *hangs head* TV. Ripley's was on and a young Ameican lady went to Mexico for the "operation" for headaches.

hehehe, i prefer to worship god by handling poisonous snakes. then make lots of little paper-cuts on my body and take a dip in a pool filled with HIV-positive blood.

do they sow up the hole then? or do they just drill a hole through the skull and let it open for cockroaches to lay their eggs in it?

They also used to think people who were having seizures were possessed by demons. When they were dying, they would be performing excorsim's on them. SOmetimes they were used as side shows. Wonderful huh?

At one time that was probably all they knew to do in certain cases. The problem is that people are conditioned to blindly do things as previous generations have done them without asking why and is there better technology available?

I think that point ended at least 500 years ago.

Does anyone know if this was a common practice where George W. Bush was raised?
It would explain a lot.

Man, he must've been drilling through a metal plate in his head, because it should've taken only a few seconds... unless he had the drill set on reverse.

Seriously, neurosurgeons use hand drills and it only takes a few cranks.  I've seen it done up close when I was shadowing in the emergency room.  I think your friend is fooling you.  But, out of curiousity, WHERE on his skull did he supposedly drill this hole?

of course, whacky beliefs show up all over the place.
100 years ago medical doctors and psychologist locked schizophrenics in metal coffins, or removed there frontal cortex's turning them into semi living vegetables.
Trepanning, by comparison, is relatively painless and safe, as any semi competent practicioner can avoid infection with some disinfectant and a bandage, and should be more than able to avoid sticking a drill into the brain.

AS for why youd do it im not sure, but id guess that like all medicine it has its share of 'miracle' stories about it...
ya know they found the first trepanned skull dating back to like 3000 bc?

I remember seeing this documentary on this fellow from Africa who has performed successful brain surgery without ANY sterile processing. Though his patients' heads were quite noticeably less than normal looking, they had nonetheless benefitted from his practice. He performed these surgeries for a variety of maladies, from tumors to trauma. It was weird to see, but somehow his crude methods were viable even from a western medical practitioner's viewpoint (included in the documentary). I can't remember if he subscribed to the "punch a hole in the head to let the demons out" philosophy.

Go to the Home Depot, get a Black & Decker drill with a 5/8" drill bit. Wrap sheet around head and drill about 1/4" deepin the back-upper right region. Push aspirin into hole, apply band-aid and your headache will be gone in 45 minutes!

Well all it sound like to me is a Frontal Lobotomy which will cause massive personility change. You can actualy survive with bit of the brain missing and even memory can survive. The brain is such a strange thing

You can actualy survive with bit of the brain missing and even memory can survive.

A standard modern serial computer cannot "survive" with even one piece missing; however parallel-distributed networks or artifical neural networks still retain some memory and functionality after being damaged or removed. This is not as mysterious as you make it sound.

Nope, not a frontal lobotomy. It simply involves drilling a hole in the skull and perhaps into a layer of tissue surrounding the brain, but not into the actual brain itself.

It's supposed to "restore blood-brain balance", improve brain metabolism and a bunch of other sketchy shit.
