Toothbrushing Poll * 2
    #25374478 - 08/08/18 08:54 AM (5 years, 7 months ago)

Originally I wanted to just do a poll about how messy brushing your teeth gets, but I'll add in a few other questions for flavor. In movies and TV there's never any toothpaste coming out of the actor/ess's mouth, for obvious reasons.

IRL, brushing my teeth is messy. I try to keep my mouth as closed as possible, but toothpaste always ends up coming out somehow, whether it's when I switching sides of my mouth, going from the top to the bottom, etc.

Is my experience normal or abnormal?
Is brushing your teeth a messy endeavor?

How often do you brush?

Do you like brushing your teeth or is a chore?

I try to brush my teeth twice a day everyday. Sometimes, I'll just get so damn lazy and fall asleep instead. I also use a manual brush, I don't like the vibrating feeling from an electric brush

The trick to getting non-messy results is something I discovered relatively late in life.

When you brush, you need to hold the end pointing upward... imagine you're holding a popsicle. The way to avoid it dripping into your hands is to hold it with the handle sticking upward, allowing gravity to lead all toothpaste back into your mouth.

Second trick is to tilt your head at an upward angle as well, so the toothpaste saliva soup remains pooled in your mouth, as opposed to dripping out...

I would choke that way!

I've been told that my mistake is to put water on my toothbrush before starting the brushing. It always gets super messy!

I had that one for ages. I'm all about Sonicare now though:

I take brushing my teeth very seriously. Probably cause I'm English and have shit teeth. Two implants and three crowns by the age of 32.

I used a Sonicare for a few years, thinking its ultrasonic action could be more reliable than Braun's 'old-fashioned' rotating action. Then my dentist recommended the Braun system to me and I thought, "heck, they're probably just getting paid to push it". Still, I thought, let's shut them up and do as they say. Bought the most nifty Braun system that comes with an external/wireless timer and whatnot. Guess what - my dentist was right. It's vastly superior to the Sonicare I used before. It just feels so much cleaner and seems to be far more effective. It is, however, also vastly superior to the entry-level Braun that my girlfriend has and she agrees - so not all Brauns are created equally. Mine was expensive as fuck, but the brushes are MUCH cheaper than the more complex Philips brushes and they're the same as the brushes for the cheaper Braun systems. I'm not some kind of health freak, not by a long shot, but I have to admit that this Braun thing was maybe the best €90 I spent. It's been going strong for about 3 years now and still works fine. If it breaks one day, I'll buy a new one right away.

Either way, any electronic system is so much better than manual. You just don't get in all the places where an electric brings you and the brushing action is just orders of magnitude more effective. Whenever I travel, I'm cast back to manual brushing and it always feels like being teleported back to the Middle Ages.
