reason for contam.

So 4 of my BRF Verm jars are contaminated as I just noticed after 7 days of being in the incubator. I was just wondering if the incubator could of caused the contamination to form? I am very doubtful that it was my sterlization proccess while insolating but who knows. I was wondering if it could have came from the incubator itself if it was unclean? My dumb ass used a tupperwear box from my basement that has been down there for a few years.. It smells like sour apples and looks like greyish/brown clumps forming on the cake.. eh I beleive it is sour rot, but what exactly causes this? Thanks

I dont have a pressure cooker so i used a big pot with a tight lid. And I boiled for about an hour and 15 minutes.

It's a gamble whether you're going to get complete sterilization of BRF jars without a pressure cooker. The temps are just not getting high enough to be sure. I think I remember someone microwaving the hell out of BRF, then boiling it as you described. . .they were contam-free. The problem with this is the potential water loss. I'd really recommend making a stop or two at some thrift stores for a small 'presto' type PC. At least here, I always see a few around, very cheap. Even if you can only get up to 5-10 PSI, it will help in a big way. You're description of the contam sounds like textbook Bacillus, the endospore-producing bugger that plagues incompletely sterilized grain. Good luck;

Read the faq about fractional sterilization. I find it the safest method if you don't have a PC.
