{MEGATHREAD} Woodchuck Appreciation Megathread * 5
    #25371253 - 08/06/18 11:54 PM (2 years, 8 months ago)

Woodchucks are just these super majestic rodent things that only live in the most super hetty dank wild flower meadows n shit and sometimes under my neighbors shed thing. they're basically a fucking enormous squirrel that fucks around on the ground cuz it's such an absolute unit. when u see one of these bad boys trucking around a field or something its jus like whoa look at that fucking thing. so since woodchucks are super hot rn its def time we had a woodchuck appreciation thread so we can share all the best woodchuck photos and stories and discuss our love for woodchuck culture.

Speaking of appreciation, today I had a groundhog come at me. I went to let my dog out and there’s this groundhog being weird around my dog’s area. I put the dog in and go to smoke a quick bowl and the thing keeps creeping closer to the house. Then I’m like.. this little cock sucker is coming right for me. I went in the house and went out on to my other deck to see where this thing is going/went. It’s like half trying to get in my house at this point and my cats want to fuck with it. It’s rabid or has distemper. So I go out to get my cat. I grab a shovel that’s beside the deck for ease of relocating cat-related corpses and head to battle. This thing has a god damned eagle eye and it knows sexy when it sees it because it was coming right for me. I circle around my car to no avail, then the little circle goes to circle around me then lunges! Lunged I tell you! I was in mah flip flops. Well I tell you hwat I appreciated that little shit so much I chopped his little hand right off. I was going for the head I think I damaged the spinal cord there. Then while it was twitching on the ground with bright red blood squirting about I smashed it’s head in. Two good whacks, you’d be surprised how resilient the skull of the North American woodchuck can be. Groundhog Day.

Yes groundhog day one of the greatest and most proud of American traditions. groundhogs possess an almost supernatural shrewd and discerning wisdom when it comes to predicting the weather. u have to develop these types of senses living under sheds n stuff or u wont survive! Our good friend Punxsutawney Phillip has correctly predicted the weather over 39% of the time!

yes there is a huge difference between a woodchuck n a beaver. the beaver lives on the other side the lake and has a whole super ballin lodge made from custom cut timber. even in 2018 with mankind's great advancements science and technology one of life's greatest mysteries still eludes us. we still dont how much wood one of these bastards chuck or if they even can chuck wood. its fascinated woodchuck behaviologist and boggled the mind of many for generations. what an incredible amazing creature. :awesomenod:

those less familiar with the wood might deny that these things can even chuck a wood at all but I've seen them palm a whole log and chuck it so hard it knocked a mans head clean off their shoulders.

I’ve read that, proportional to body size, barnacles have the biggest dicks in the animal world.  IDK, could be wrong.

*CHUCKFACT*
While hibernating, a woodchuck’s body temperature can drop from about 99 degrees to as low as 37 (Humans go into mild hypothermia when their body temperature drops a mere 3 degrees, lose consciousness at 82 degrees and face death below 70 degrees). The heart rate of a hibernating woodchuck slows from about 80 beats per minute to 5. Breathing slows from around 16 breaths per minute to as few as 2!

*moar chuckfacts*
when woodchucks are cruisin for some dolled up hottie chuckbooty they like to whistle at em.  at dusk they use a loud whistle when when the street lights come on to tell the chuckettes to get their asses home before dad starts chuckin logs.  i've also heard em whistle a warning to other chucks when they see a hawk or fox on the prowl for chuckchops.

that's why they're sometimes called whistle-pigs around here.

Interesting. I'm going camping next weekend and I was told to wrap the car in a tarp because the marmots eat the wires.

Do woodchucks eat wires?

They look the same. It's no joke. One guy on that claim camped there and had to surround his truck in moth balls to keep them away. I was told they will chew vehicle wires and didn't think it was a real issue. Next thing
I knew one was inside of my vehicle rummaging around. Kinda scary when you're 12 miles up the antero mountain road on mt white at 13,000'.

I heard the North Korean's, in conspiracy with Trump and Russia, are shipping in Marmots in alarming numbers. I'm talking in the millions. They are going to eat our car wiring and then house wiring and drive us back to the stone age.

The only way to fight back is to fill their countries with Honey Badgers!

Biology
Some species live in mountainous areas, such as the Alps, northern Apennines, Carpathians, Tatras, and Pyrenees in Europe; northwestern Asia; the Rocky Mountains, Black Hills, the Cascade and Pacific Ranges, and the Sierra Nevada in North America; and the Deosai Plateau in Pakistan and Ladakh in India. Other species prefer rough grassland and can be found widely across North America and the Eurasian Steppe. The similarly sized but more social prairie dog is not classified in the genus Marmota, but in the related genus Cynomys.

Marmots typically live in burrows (often within rockpiles, particularly in the case of the yellow-bellied marmot), and hibernate there through the winter. Most marmots are highly social and use loud whistles to communicate with one another, especially when alarmed.

Marmots mainly eat greens and many types of grasses, berries, lichens, mosses, roots, and flowers.

Subgenera and species
The following is a list of all Marmota species recognized by Thorington and Hoffman[1] plus the recently defined M. kastschenkoi.[2] They divide marmots into two subgenera.

History and etymology

Marmota primigenia fossil
Marmots have been known since antiquity. Research by the French ethnologist Michel Peissel claimed the story of the "Gold-digging ant" reported by the Ancient Greek historian Herodotus, who lived in the fifth century BCE, was founded on the golden Himalayan marmot of the Deosai Plateau and the habit of local tribes such as the Brokpa to collect the gold dust excavated from their burrows.[6]

The etymology of the term "marmot" is uncertain. It may have arisen from the Gallo-Romance prefix marm-, meaning to mumble or murmur (an example of onomatopoeia). Another possible origin is post-classical Latin, mus montanus, meaning "mountain mouse".[7]

Beginning in 2010, Alaska celebrates February 2 as "Marmot Day", a holiday intended to observe the prevalence of marmots in that state and take the place of Groundhog Day.[8]

So yes the woodchuck, groundhog, or whistlepig is actually Marmota Monax.

*CHUCKFACT*
The woodchuck is a solitary animal who lives underground in a large, elaborate burrow, called a sette. These underground mazes may be 80 feet long, with several levels and multiple entrances. Most adult chucks dig 3 or 4 separate settes on their territory!

If this thread has a purpose, I think it should be to correct the woodchuck name and start calling them by their more dignified name of Marmot. Woodchuck, rockchuck, whistlepig are are disrespectful and laughed at names given to the astute and dignified marmot.

Woodchucks are skilled climbers and swimmers, which helps them to escape less-skilled predators. Their burrows are so complex that each has its own "bathroom" chamber.

I approve of this rename. I think we should petition the various science hives around the world and get them to change it officially.  Whistle pig sounds way more fun than wood chuck.

Whatever colloquial term you use be it whistle pig , groundhog, digger cat, yard bear, land beaver, marmot, we jus luv em ok! :sadyes:

*CHUCKFACT*
The name woodchuck has nothing to do with wood. Or chucking. It is derived from the Algonquian name for the critters, wuchak.  The woodchuck is one of several North American animals whose name has Native American origins. Unfortunately, those exact origins are unknown. Early colonists in New England reported that "wuchak" was the name for the animal in a local Algonquian language, but this word was never recorded in a dictionary and the Algonquian languages of that region are no longer natively spoken, so the original form of the word has been lost to time. It may have actually been the word for a fisher (a member of the weasel family) instead, since the word for fisher sounds similar to wuchak in living Algonquian languages (such as the Cree word ocek, pronounced similar to oo-check.) Or it might have been an English corruption of a longer word like the Narragansett word ockqutchaun, which did refer to a woodchuck. In any case, English-speaking Americans later adapted the name "wuchak" into the modern form "woodchuck," which was easier for them to remember. :sadyes:

*CHUCKFACT*
If properly aligned, woodchuck upper and lower incisors grind away at each other with every bite, keeping suitably short; when not in good order, they may miss one another and just keep growing until they look like the tusks on a wild boar; if too long, a woodchuck’s upper incisors can impale the lower jaw, with fatal results. :goat:

*CHUCKFACT*

woodchucks can, and will bite. They prefer to run and hide in their burrow, but they will bite a person when trapped, frightened and/or trying to escape. We see this happen every few years to some unsuspecting mayor while trying to pose for photos at a Groundhog Day celebration. If groundhogs are being trapped for their coat, they will definitely be afraid, aggravated and trying to get free of their human captor.

They can take a mans finger clean off. The mountain folk and frontiersman in the days of yore often spoke of their incredible bite. :sadyes:

Woodchucks prefer to feed in the early morning and evening hours. They are strict herbivores and feed on a variety of vegetables, grasses, and legumes. Preferred foods include soybeans, beans, peas, carrot tops, alfalfa, clover, and grasses.

During hibernation—150 days without eating—a woodchuck will lose no more than a fourth of its body weight thanks to all the energy saved by the lower metabolism.

My yard is basically on a peninsula of swamp land. There's one really small pond area where all the wildlife congregates, mostly woodchucks, muskrats and ducks during the day.

The muskrats swim upstream and collect brush and twigs, then come motoring downstream with it all in their mouth to bring back to wherever their home is. The woodchucks love messing with the muskrats. They'll jump out of bushes and scare the shit out of the muskrats, causing them to drop all their twigs and stuff and run away. The ducks don't care about anyone, there's one with a bum leg that's been coming back every summer for years, he's got a lady duck that's super defensive of him.

Can't wait until it gets warmer, eating some acid or smoking and kicking back watching these critters is an experience

One time I saw a "woodchuck" on the side of the street as all the snow was melting and the ditch was flooded, I said "look a groundhog" and it dived into watery ditch, then I was like "ehhr muskrat"

Today is groundhogs day! :w00t: Throngs of adoring fans journeyed from all over the world to gather at Gobbling Knob just to catch a short glimpse of our beloved hero Punxsutawney Philip. Philip didn't not see his shadow and has decreed there will be an early spring!

I completely forgot about groundhog day. It's cold as a well digger's ass though so I guess I know how it turned out.

When I was a child there was a family of woodchucks near my house and I'd always see them going into the storm sewer.
