Friend having problems...
    #2536179 - 04/07/04 07:43 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Ok, so a friend of mine has made PF jars, he followed the recipe correctly and packed the jars loosely. He put a layer of verm contam layer, followed by a layer of perlite, followed by a small layer of verm on top of the perlite. However, after PCing, it seems the substrate layer got tamped down a bit during the process, and now the contam layer rolls around the top of the jar, as there is now a lot of space between the lid, so now whenever the jar is disturbed, the contam barrier and substrate are mixing together. How can this be avoided in future jar preparations? Thanks.

Only as a contam barrier, I'm convinced that both perlite and vermiculite stink by themselves as contamination barriers, (Perlite has too many spaces in it, vermiculite tends to get damp and have contams grow in it) so I have a triple layered contam barrier, a layer of verm first over the substrate layer, then perlite, and finally another layer of verm. The problem is when I make jars light and fluffy, they tend to sink, and so does the contam barrier with it, which makes it that much more convenient for contams. I'm trying to get suggestions for ways to keep the substrate light and fluffy without having the contam barrier sinking with it after I PC.
