This has been covered by me in detail, but the archives are abbreviated.
To make it to the top, you need two things: ruthless ambition and the ability to compromise. No, not the good kind of compromise as in meeting people half-way, but the ability to compromise your integrity to get what you want.
Those with pure hearts rarely rise above the local level as it is too painful and against their morals for them to play the game to win. To get the support needed, you must wash the hands of those already in power and neglect the "little people". Thus it is nearly impossible to have a truly moral political leader.
That is why those who had the greatest moral affect such as Jesus, Ghandi, and MLK were non-politicians outside of the "system".

More salt-of-the-earth wisdom from Swami. 
Not only do those with pure hearts not make it to the top, they are relentlessly deceived and exploited by those less pure. At least, that's been true of all of the really pure people I've known in my life. I don't know whether to be grateful for my own lack of purity that has spared me that fate, or what.
I'll be checking the dates and times on subsequent posts to see how long it takes for somebody to accuse you of just being "jealous" of those at the "top".

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
