How much hydrated lime?
    #2534364 - 04/07/04 11:08 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Howdy,
I have read the various casing teks on Hydrated Horticultural Lime, and also the Ryche Hawk lime note in his ultimate casing tek. Hawk warns against burning. I have a bag of Hoffman's Hydrated Horticultural Lime. I have not been able to find oyster shell, but there is literally gobs of limestone around naturally. I plan to case to store bought pre-composted poo, store bought composted peat, vermiculite and either Hoffman's Hydrated Horticultural Lime or limestone (--that might be naturally occuing dolomite--) that I find on roads and cliffs.  My question: To avoid burning, how much Hydrated Horticultural Lime? Or should I just forget it in favour of limestone? Any posts would be appreciated. I realize that Hawk puts a measure in his tek, but also warns against burning, so I freaked out. Thanks. The Drunken Afficianado
PS The casing will be for B+, Kuo Samui Super Strain, Mexi-Cube, Huatla, and Penis envy :wexican:

As stated in my post, I read those-- all of them. I am basically looking for someone who has used Hoffman's Hydrated Horticultural Lime specifically, and what quantities they used for what strains. Further, I have read every post back to the 111th page so far, and will continue. I am not asking a question that has been answered concerning the specific brand of lime. As stated in sevral posts, diffrent strains hav different Ph needs. Anyone else want to take a shot? The Drunken Afficianado

Well dont jump my ass to but I use 1 cup of hydrated lime to every 4 cups of peat as well as 1 cup of oyster shell to 4 cups of peat the 4-1-1 casing I call it, I usally put this casing over soaked straw on my outdoor patches, you can find oyster shell at any feed store

Thank you boomer420, I was not trying to jump anybody's involuntary ass (it is against my religion-- Jainism--especially unlubricated). My only point was that I had already stated that I had read those faqs/teks. It seems like that is a lot of lime. Do you dilute the lime in water? Do you add it to your compost pile?
And what is oyster shell used for "legitamately", so when they make more conversation for me at the feed store, I can say what I will use the oyster shell for? What brand of lime do you you use? And do you prepare th lime and oyster shells with the peat "in compost" or when you pasteurize? And do you use oven or boil methods of pasteurization? I am really not trying to be a total dick, and I know I have a total of 4 or 5 posts, but I have good karma at the overgrow.com board, and I attmpt to avoid problems rather than nuke spores/mycelium in a lime outfrakage. Peace. The drunken afficianado

just figure it out from the 50/50 + tech, find the ratio, apply it to how much your mixing up. if you use the 50/50 plus recipe its 4.5 cups i believe, hoffmans is a good brand.
oyster shells are used for birds to supply calcium and strengthen thier breaks / nails. you can find it at pet stores.

From
http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7977

"Adding 4% agricultural hydrated lime and 15% crushed oyster shell, by volume, to the over all 50/50 mix"

As you see this differs from "1 cup of hydrated lime to every 4 cups of peat" by several factors.
