Mechanical vibration instead of stirring for liquid cultures
    #25339965 - 07/22/18 02:21 AM (5 years, 8 months ago)

I was contemplating the idea of using vibrations of low frequency to help break mycelium clumps. Does this method have merits? Anyone here has a first-hand experience with this method or has it ever been mentioned in the literature?

This thread was moved from Advanced Mycology.

Reason:
Do whatever works. Most of us just shake with some marbles or broken glass because even a stir plate is a ridiculous extra unnecessary expensive gadget to have around let alone a ultrasonic viabrator.

Also what literature? There are a few cultivation books that well I strongly would suggest avoiding. Then there's the forums where information is good and plenty.

Where there is some scientific literature about mushrooms. Most of the studies are put together by people that don't know much about growing mushrooms. So often times you'll read the study and be like WOW they really should have done their research over at the shroomery first.

By literature, I meant as in hard science mycology or microbiology. Not necessarily on mushroom cultivation, per se. I was expecting a more educated guess kind of reply. That's why I posted it in ADVANCED MYCOLOGY in the first place!

The methods used in scientific literature are usually based off what they find on websites like the shroomery. But they usually do a shit job. Quite literally most of the scientific literature on fungi is shit and often times they quite literally cite shroomery.org for methods.

Or a bioreactor is used, and then they're usually not trying to fruit in those studies.

Ok, since you appear to know a lot about mushroom cultivation. Let me rephrase my original question. Do you think placing a strong vibrator (like the kind you find in your gf/wife stash) under a liquid culture jar is enough to de-clump the damn mycelium and make it spread more evenly throughout the solution? Just a theoretical question

sure it would help but why bother? myc in LC isnt THAT hard to break up. use simple methods like marbles or glass shards.
or dont even worry about doing that and just pour LCs. lots of options beside bastardizing a dildo for mushroom cultivation.

:solidnod:

We know some species of mushrooms get prolific flushes around landslides. Upturned trees.

Hard to say if vibration has any benefit. I mean they're accomplishing the same thing. Broken mycelium.

You could always make an Lc in a paint can and ask a hardware store to mix it up for you. I have this gut feeling that sustained vibration isn't very healthy though. I once had to move 4 fully colonized tubs in a car on a 2 hour drive. It was a proven culture but 3 of them didn't fruit. There were other factors involved but I just got this nagging feeling that the car ride wasn't very healthy for them.

I'm sure one of these paint can shakers would work.

Or you could just swirl the jar around.

My girl gets pissed when things go missing from the kitchen into my mycology room.
I can't even imagine her reaction if I stole her vibrator to stir LCs.

I don't think vibration is going to be the best method. And probably not even that effective.

The shaker they're talking about is highly likely to be an orbital shaker which is more of a stir and not a vibration.
And funny enough those kinds of shakers are usually known as BOD shakers these days. Not named after me tho haha. But flasks clamp into a floor/plate that is on a cam and the bottles will swirl rather than vibrate for agitation.
