There is no such thing as PP5. 5 is simply the recycling code for PP. There is no PP3 or PP 8. If it MELTS at 15 psi it is simply not PP. Do not stack PP containers because they get soft during heating and enough weight on them will deform them.

There are indeed some PP deli container lids available, very hard to find but I found some. They are just very thin and un-stackable but work fine if you don't stack.

Closest pp5 looking Petri dish you're going to find .... Ive looked for years

Damn... and it would have a hinged lid, wouldn't it...

Oh well, if I find anything I will let you know.

If you hate the lid being attached you can easily cut it off

Also  i've used no poor PP five glad round Minitec for years and my contamination is always a lot higher that way then it ever is with petri dishes

Oh  Big lots has this style container which is way better than the glad miny rounds

^^^^^ THESE!!!!!!

A MILLION TIMES OVER!!!!!

Those containers from Big Lots ROCK BALLZ, bro.

I don't think I even want to look any further for anything else. They fit in the PC perfectly, and if you use the tenting method that Josex uses in his TEK they stack like mad.

You had said to just do a vent in the top and from everything I can see that would be just fine. I think that a small vent in the lip just under the top/seal would be fine as well.

In Josex's TEK that's pretty much what he did. AND he pulled them hot. He said something to the effect of that eliminating a lot of the condensation issues.

Since there is a slight lip on the outside edge of the top I think that putting the vent on the side will help keep the tape a touch more toward the dry side when pulling hot and stacking (just because there is a chance of condensate to pool on the lid as well the tape not being able to air-dry as well when it is underneath the container stacked on top of it. My theory anyway.)

I'm going to try that. Probably with three layers of micropore tape like Josex runs in his TEK.

I have a tendency to grab these by the snaps/locks so I don't think that there will be any issue with disturbing the tape.

No need for a napkin and fancy packing that way, etc.

The Glad Mini Rounds all day for "Tiger Dropping"... but these... these are aces.

They're also a lot cheaper than I thought they would be. $1.80 for 3, so 60 cents a piece. They pay for themselves after the second use vs disposable petri dishes.

Plus they ******* NO POUR!

These are great.

At just over 3.5" wide and a bit over 1" tall/deep... that's perfect for what I need them for. Enough air gap for the vent to not be necessary for GE with enough room to pour a good amount of Agar in them (and avoid any scalpel cuts to the bottom). The width is on par with many of the petri dishes I was looking at... just perfect.

Good stuff.

Thanks, 99.99.

Got me some new goodies. First off is a new scalpel. My old one, the blade was really choked up on the handle and it was kind of shitty to flame sterilize. This one feels much more ergonomic. Gonna bust it out on some cloning this weekend.

And I got a new lighting rig. I got two so when I get some shelving later or stack tubs I can sidelight with two rows of them. But with 4,000 lumens in a closet this will work for now.

I finally heard back from this company (and got a straight answer).

"Both are made of PP." (Meaning the container AND the lid.)

https://freundcontainer.com/2332t11-clear-pp-plastic-round-snap-lock-containers-tamper-evident-lid/

I'm sticking with the ones from Big Lots for now though. They seem thicker, the lids lock down, and they have a sealing ring/gasket.

What about this stuff? The company claims it is a variant of PP...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nalgene

I wrote them in regards to it and they said to not pressure cook it past 15 minutes...

Sidenote:

Pressure cooked Glad Mini Rounds @ 15psi for 30 minutes.

Lids fit loosely now. (1st time to PC. New containers.)

I believe Nalgene is in fact a type of polycarbonate not polypropylene.

When using PP or nylon containers you need to make sure that the containers have an adequate filter on them or the vacuum that is created during the extreme temperature changes of pressure cooking will deform the warm containers as it cools. Also do not stack anything on top of them this will also deform the hot containers.

I did some looking around...

Most people use a #11 blade for mycology (on a #3 handle).

#11 blades do not fit a #4 handle.

BUT the equivalent is a #25.

Looking forward to rocking a #4 handle with #25 blades.

Gonna be fun.

Feels good to me but I got little baby hands. Biggest thing I'm happy about is the neck between the blade and the handle. I can flame sterilize the whole thing comfortably, so no worries about putting a non-sterile part of the scalpel over my work.

Just chasing down ghosts here, maybe...

I could still do things the way they do them in other countries with unfiltered PP bags, collars, some polyfill/cotton... but to make a unicorn bag... the ones most people use around here...

When looking through bags at the Uline website and comparing them to Unicorn bags... I found something interesting.

They are modifying the polypropylene.

"With PP resin, different proprietary raw material mix is used to modify PP to reduce oxidation and add to the PP resin a modifier to make the final autoclaved bag retain impact strength, or more stretch. Thus modified, bags will less likely have holes, and sealing temperature is widened."

That will most likely make me give up on finding a way to make my own unicorn substitutes. Probably. At least the type everyone around here is used to seeing/using.

I was close up to that statement. Very close.

https://www.uline.com/BL_5560/Gusseted-Polypropylene-Bags

There are other ways to skin that cat though. And filter patches aren't even necessary.

So... dope.

(It would also make it easier when PC'ing to not have to worry about all the BS involved with how the bag is folded, pre-vac or not pre-vac'ing, choosing the best filter micron size for mushroom type, how to arrange square bags in the PC to maximize space/volume, etc. I mean hell, they literally just throw the things in a 55 gallon barrel and PC them with a tire inner tube as a gasket around the bolt-down lid. Lol. [And for all the lurkers, yes, I am fully aware of open flames, edges of PC vessels, and the nuances involved in not meliting a bag.])

The journey continues...

(This is something I work on with a few people every now and then throughout the month. I thought maybe it would add to your information on the subject of "different types of polypropylene" and what not... somewhat related anyway.)

If I get too far off topic an admin will say something though so I will just leave it there. Lol.

It comes down to ergonomics I suppose.

(*Edit 1 - Added quote from Wagner about model differences.)

Pulled this out of an old TEK (1000 [fairly large] bags for pasteurization for $64):

https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-123/Poly-Bags-Gusseted/8-x-4-x-18-2-Mil-Gusseted-Poly-Bags?model=S-123&ref=154

He uses them for pasteurization in THIS:

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6972036/fpart/all/vc/1

You can dress that concept up however you want to... PID controllers, thermostat controllers, reservoirs with float valves... etc. etc. etc. or even dress it down by taking that thermometer out and using a remote temperature probe until you get your times/temps down.

(Model number for that wallpaper steamer has changed... (Wagner 715 Power Steamer):

https://www.amazon.com/Wagner-0282036-Power-Steamer-Gallon/dp/B06X6HM2GG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1531935025&sr=8-1&keywords=wagner+wallpaper+steamer

When I scale up this is the concept I will use. (It was an idea I thought I had half conceived from other stuff I had seen... but... he got to it a looong time ago.)

Anyway, going to be a "new tool" for me one day. Just not today.

L8.

I found out... if the link was correct... that they have discontinued the Wagner 705 1000watt model.

I have seen listings for a Wagner 705 model with a 1500watt element although I would feel better about going with a 715 if I were inclined to run a 1500watt unit.

I did manage to find a few new condition 705's out there with 1000watt elements.

I ordered one in new condition with a damaged display box off of eBay for $38 (shipping included).

To my knowledge there is no outstanding difference between the 705 1000watt model and the 715 1500watt model except for the wattage.

All the reviews indicate that they take the same time to heat up and put out the same amount of steam vs time.

I went with the 705 simply to cut back on the power load for the circuit the unit will be on.

- - - - -

From Wagner:

"The 705 and 715 steamers are basically the same. The hose is a little longer on the 715, the fill cap on the 715 has a pressure relief valve built in, and the hose screws into the housing instead of onto the opening so it looks a little different. Performance wise they are the same. Please call us at 1-800-328-8251 and we will assist you with any further questions."

(All of which is completely nonessential for this application... and somehow the 715 requires 500w more power than the traditional 705 model.)

500 gram capacity. Comes with an AC adapter too. It’s a tiny bit off and I can’t find my damn 200g calibration weight. 500 gram weight reads as 499.77g. I need both 200 and 500g weights to calibrate it. $22.49 on eBay.

@NumeroUno, I think I had an extremely similar looking balance about 2 years ago, but I had to send it back because it would recalibrate EVERY time it went off. Now I use a little 0.1g kitchen scale . I really wanna get a proper balance but they're so damn expensive.

@NothingsChanged, a biological safety cabinet has no use in mushroom growing. They are reverse flowhoods, in a way. They do not protect the material being worked on from contamination, they protect the user from bio hazardous material being worked on.
