Put what over the coir? If you mean the coir depth I don't think it matters to be honest, the surface area evaporating off humidity will still be the same

I actually don't think perlite evaporates off moisture as effectively as wet coir or water. Not in a closed tub at least. I've compared humidity in these tubs with coir vs perlite and with the lid ajar the coir tub wins cause it never dries out on the surface. Perlite that stands for a while dries eventually out cause it doesn't hold as much water. And it starts to smell like shit when kept in a tub with the lid on. Yuck. I think that perlite on top of coir could hinder the evaporation.

Okay, my best results for cakes are:
The aquarium fruiting chamber has constant FAE and adjustable lights. works awesome! Okay, I have other photos i could load, but I found that keeping a layer of perlite under the vermiculite works great. I suppose that the casing could be a mix of coir and verm. I will load the other photos if you are that interested. PF cakes work great in sub. Here is a photo of a sub that is coir and pf cakes throwing fruit.
. Oh, misting the perlite with a little h2o2 will prevent any stink.

Are you typically leaving the lid ajar the entire time? Do you run into issues with condensation dripping out?

No I usually keep the lid on or flip it, but humidity is high enough so you can leave the lid ajar and still enjoy very high RH.

Are you eye balling the field capacity? You said it should be super, duper wet? Like...dripping with a soft squeeze, wet?
How many qts are you using per chamber? I want to try these with a 6qt shoebox

Its not really something you need to measure. Just get some coir dripping wet and keep it wet. That's about all there is to it
You mean you want to put the shoebox into a chamber?

1-2 inches thick, as long as the entire bottom is covered in something wet.

Looking good so far. One of the cakes had started pinning before I rolled verm over it. It has since burst out and started growing.(looks like it's supporting itself above the slushy goodness )
More on the way.

I bet you could use vermiculite, i dont see why you couldnt it just has to be something that will keep evaporating moisture and not dry out.

Is fruiting cakes whole like this better than busting it up and mixing it into the substrate? My first grow is nearing full colonization and I'm still trying to decide whether to try this out or shred 'em up.

I posted a pic of my cakes progress on the 27th and now they look much the same as they did 6 days ago. Are they being slow or am I being an impatient new grower?
