Any Ideas?
    #2533438 - 04/07/04 12:53 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

I'm constructing my Pod, I have 2 large rubbermaid containers, but my fishtank heater isn't the submersible kind, it's the mount-on type. Any ridiculously awesome ideas folks? I'm going to be colonizing 5 jars tops, so space isn't a necessity, perhaps putting a smaller container inside the larger one to accomodate for the size required around the edge for the mount? I'm sure someone has ran into this problem, just wondering what ideas have been devised around the hinderance.

Cheers! :wexican:

Sounds good to me....

You didnt mention perlite/geolite but i assume you have it...

Also by 5 jars tops, do you mean 5 one half pint cakes?  You should make more, i say at least 10 cakes

I meant for my incubation period, it needs to be 80-85 Fahrenheit, correct? That's why I want to keep it nice and cozy inside. As for fruiting chamber,, hell I haven't even thought about it, probably put it in my garage where it's ~70-75 in one of the rubbermaids with perlite.

Good idea about putting a big huge jug/mug/vase inside the incubator, but will that really raise the temp to my desired range? The idea seems tangible, but does water emit that much heat into it's surroundings that it would bring the entire internal temp of the incubator to my 85 range?

Thanks again.

Not sure about water producing enough heat.. I believe that the amount of heat that is radiated from the container of water is directly related to the amount of surface area it has.(and the temp of the water) A container with an opening with a diameter slightly larger than your heater would make it easy to mount,as well as minimize the amount of evaporation into the incubation chamber.

Good luck, I hope this helps!

I solved the problem, quite elaborately at that. What I did was take my 51 litre Rubbermaid container, mount the heater onto the side. Then I cut a whole in the lid to accomodate for the protruding end of the mount and temperature dial. Then I filled the container with enough water to bring the water line up to the heaters specification, dropped a small cooler inside, and put the lid on, with weights on it. This way the cooler won't be so buoyant that the lid will push up, exposing less water to the exterior of the cooler, and thus degrading my incubators efficiency by a substantial amount. There only lies one problem, that being what if the cooler somehow manages to float its way over to the heater, making contact with it, which might melt the plastic cooler if the heater gets too hot. How I worked my way around this one was fairly simple, I constructed a small frame out of wood in my garage, to the exact dimensions of the cooler. Looked like this

---+---+---
.....| X |.....
---+---+---

Where X is the cooler, and the frames are pushing against the edges of the rubbermaid container, maintaining its desired position without free room to float around.

Yay Me!

Thanks guys.
