My issue with the clean culture argument is if you have an unclean culture then you have a problem whether you drop it or LI it Its not like dropping it solves your problem

if you have hidden bacteria you get compost if you turn it into li. If you use agar you can get something out if it. Quote:

Either you have a clean culture at this point or you don't.
Putting it in water doesn't somehow make your ability to identify worse
no, but if you prep your grains too wet li will do the opposite of help

This is not always true. Contams can hide. Also,

You can actually push fruits out of a bacterial jar, li give that same bacteria too much of an edge for that to be possible

If you have problems with hidden bacteria and whatnot then maybe it is beneficial to bring it out where you can see it, and address whatever your problems are instead of continuing to grow bacterial cultures/jars

I'm just saying noobs dont know any better. I don't struggle anymore but i have and people touting li as this super easy fast way to mushrooms held my progress back quite a bit.

are you sure it was the LI, and that you would have definitely had better results if you went the other route? Maybe in the process of failing you learned how to do better

A picture... and a question about fruiting. The veils are starting to break on my PESA and they're still quite small. Is this normal? My impression has always been that the fruit body grows much more before the veil breaks. More watering needed?
At least excited to be getting fruits.

Thanks

Those don't look premature by any means, chalk it up to genetics

Positive, i used the same cultures for both and didnt get much from them, but nothing from the li. I atleast got a few trips put of the a2g ones. Back on topic.

And these hpoo shoeboxes coming along nicely. the less colonized one was layered the more colonized one was mixed

An agar plate dropped in a grain jar with some bacteria is not that bad. Thr bactetia will be limited in how much grain it can cover. With LI you are spreading bacteria around the entire grain jar. With LC you are actively encouraging contams to grow. Thats why agar is safer.

Theoretically dropping a wedge into sterile water is an added step and you can fuck it up. But all you need to succéed is clean cultures and good technique, just like A2G.. *cough*
Tho dropping a wedge onto grain gives you an added benefit of being able to visually inspect the progress of recovery locally to easier determine if only healthy myc is colonizing or not. But this inspection is not 100% either, BUTT its pretty damn high percentully.
General success rate of LI is about >98% if culture is clean and sterile Tek is spot on, same with A2G. Ya know?

But judging by their small size (4" height) and small girth, they could still grow more? I'm basing this expectation upon other PESA pictures I've seen. It they don't grow any bigger, then yes it could be genetics, or something environmental (ie. water, substrate)?

If the veil is torn you wont get more weight, they may take up more space. You cant tell what you'll get based on variety name. Spores are a crapshoot.

Using sterile technique when inoculating with CLEAN cultures has been proven to be a success
